actually, apparently Brian May is actually a pHd in astro physics - I'm sure I'm not in the majority, but to me that makes Queen even more godlike than they already so effortlessly were
Yes, how true...... Only last week me an Bri were chewin the phat about Planck's Action Constant and how Planck insisted that this was simply an aspect of the absorption and radiation of energy and had nothing to do with the physical reality of the energy itself....

Then..... Sean Bleedin' Ryder turned up and posted a picture of some oily tits!!

it takes that kind of special understanding of the energetic flows of the universe in order to accurately and persuasively shred among the gods of rock

Serious Now.

Here is a question that perhaps someone could help me understand.

If you look at Evolution in the Big sense of the word, as a model of understanding how life in its current form exists on planet earth (no Alien or God help), what is the current thinking about the biological development needed within a species to cross major physical barriers like

1. Moving from filtering air from water to breathing only air.
2. Using flippers to guide through water to hauling a body over dry ground where the effects of gravity are far greater.
3. Moving from single celled snot to simultaneously developing male and female reproduction organs, while developing the 'awareness to go look for a fuck in order to have offspring, let alone nurturing instincts, (let alone to have offspring now suddenly imprinted with all of the new DNA? properties in order to not go backwards).

Now I am not a scientist, hence asking for clarification. The theory of Evolution is generally posited as a long drawn out process including random unplanned (on the species part) physiological development to adapt to the small changes demanded by natural surroundings (in a simple almost childish sense). These combine together over looooong periods of time to form something different from the original species.

However, and this is where someone could fix my thinking, the above 3 examples, when thought about for more than 5 sec's, require cataclysmic, multiple unit development. For instance, to move from cell division to any other form of reproduction means that you have to play a numbers game. Both female and male develop at the same time, in the same area, with the same instinctual behaviors. The physiological change needed to accommodate an entirely new system of reproduction, or breathing, or travel have to be within a single generation.

Please tell me I am wrong and why this is not sound thinking.

the numbers game.

Emissary's comment about Dawkins balking at the missing link led me to listen to this youtube the other day on this very topic.

my bad but I try to keep that shit out of my head, it's kinda freaky how people are obsessed with them.

Riiggghtt. Well, assuming you're not just joking, you do realize that any shred of credibility you might have had has just evaporated.

Well, I'm off back to Alpha Centauri Eta. See you in a 1000 years or so.

I'm by no means an expert, but in my (limited) understanding it's really about just what a staggeringly long time it happened over - life evolves in all kinds of random directions and it has millions of years to do it in, and the ones that are successful survive so gradually it gets refined - like organisms in the ocean start off only being drawn to sunlight, then after a million years some develop the ability to distinguish between green and blue so they can head for the algae and so they get stronger while the other ones starve...something like that anyway

the early amoebic type life forms were actually around for something like a billion years before anything else came along, so I think the whole process happened exponentially - really really slow at first then once we got legs we were away - something like that

personally I think it's hard to deny that there is some characteristic of sentience that is able to exert will powerfully enough to actually change physical make-up - the power of thought if you like

if you are at all interested in this kind of thing I strongly recommend a book called "A short history of nearly everything" by Bill Bryson - great writer and he basically set out to spend 3 years researching all the different schools of science and condense it and put it into language anyone can understand - that book was absolutely captivating and it almost led me to start thinking religious thoughts for the exact reasons mentioned in this thread - because the universe is just so awe inspiringly amazing

I think you're overlooking the posibility of multiple modes being present in the same organism.

a sea creature with fins just strong enough to drag itself on to the beach could escape predators. And there are creatures alive today that can reproduce both sexually and asexually.

The biggest mystery to me is how life began in the first place.

(damn - I meant to keep out of this thread!)

Thanks. I sat through it. Interesting. Cheesy music and narration aside, this whole video high lights the leaps of faith needed to believe (as quoted by the last prof examining the jaw fragment hailed to be the true missing link, or a valid transitional form).

The interesting thing for me was that the whole subject of this particular missing link/transitional form focused in on only the legs and digits. "We believe it walked, therefore its a missing link."

What I find amazing was that there was no discussion of the multitude of other physiological changes needed simultaneously for the attempt to walk to be a success. Its one thing to say that this fish walked, its another thing to say it walked, and breathed, and protected itself from UV light, changed its staple food choice and digestive system, developed new teeth, and on top of that found a female version who new what to do when being mounted. I am sure there are far more things like blood flow and oxygenation, no need for gills etc.

Even these guys at the beginning of Pt2 admit to catastrophic events causing the chance mutations, specifically drought. There was immediate environmental change that needed swift mutation, not long drawn out adaption.

The guy at the end who made the final analysis with the help of a pre programmed computer (hints of predestination) admits that all of this new evidence comes from "one paltry bone."

Still, it was worth the watch, and would recommend it.
