you hold up your mobile device that can display images, and that check stand red laser gun that was hot news in the 80s is whats used to scan it.
your love for Apple is shadowed only by your love for Apple.
It's a little more involved than that. Barcode scanning apps have already been around for awhile.
This is about going into Home Depot and paying for it using your iPhone which would also involve local tax and getting money to the proper destination.

That really is quite beautiful and while I don't believe in goofy catchphrases for sigs, I may well have to make an exception in this case.

ok.
but tell me how this is going to skip the human intervention part??? any way you slice it you have to have the items rung up and accept the price.
it'll be a hell of a sales pitch.
sales dude: this is the future
merchant/corporate hq: whats it cost?
sales dude: well no more than your current setup
merchant/corporate hq: which is why we're backing our current investment
sales dude: but it will save the customer a few seconds
merchant/corporate hq:
sales dude: this is what they're using at the Apple store!
merchant/corporate hq:
i can't wait until the new reason for picking the wrong check out lane is because the lady ahead of me dropped her phone trying to pay and accidentally kicked it under the charcoal display while trying to pick it up. yay!

First let me say I don't think this type thing is going to be an iPhone exclusive. At some point all smart phones will be able to do this.
I also don't think the point is to take the human interaction out of the equation. I think it's just another step towards smartphones being all things to all people which even before this I find quite scary when you consider the amount of personal information people already potentially keep on their phone. Imagine losing your phone and somebody hacks your virtual wallet of credit cards.

yeah, i'm not exactly excited about that.
hell even having the GPS on freaks me out.
... and i still stand by my earlier lack of enthusiasm for where this could be going...

I'm disturbed by people who use "check-in" apps that let's anybody on facebook know where you are and when.
In related news analysts are saying this new technology could upset the credit card industry if potentially 160 million people are paying for everything through their itunes account.
Anybody have sympathy for the credit card industry? Anybody?

Europe and Japan are way ahead of us on this stuff. Or at least used to be - using IR cellphones to purchase crap at vending machines, getting gas at the pump, etc. I think you could also use your IR to purchase over the counter stuff as well. Little device on the counter. Point your phone. Beep! Transaction Complete.
All of that was tied to a credit card account, of course. I've no idea where that stuff is at now that IR is a thing of the past?

Point being?
Kudos to Steve Jobs for once again reinventing something that's an everyday part of our lives.
Apple and iTunes FTW!

Yeah, the Japanese are totally ahead of the ball on technology, but that's totally offset by their shit taste in music and video games.
But then they climb ahead of the curve by being the most perverted people on the planet. But then they sink below by pixilating the money shot.
I'd say

<-is the greatest gift they've given the world but that's clearly Chinese.

I can't stand anime and ironically it's the only major media outlet that has embraced my music by using my tracks for about a half dozen of their trailers.
Well that, and a B horror movie I thought never got made until a year later when a friend contacted me with "Dude, you're music is in this awful horror movie." Coincidently pictures of my roommate were also in the same movie and she didn't know about it either until I told her.

Two things:
It's looking less and less likely that I'll be getting an iPad2.
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11 ... rumor.html
The lack of any really cool Apple news over the past 2 weeks has me =
NOTHING of substance on the iP5.
Or was that 3 things?
