I've been reading several reviews on Android based tablets. Funnier reading is not to be found anywhere.

Most of the reviews get the hype going very early with an exclamation point (!) used in the headline. Like this:

Samsung Galaxy Tab Reviewed!

It's kinda like the cheerleaders before the game starts. Let's get the boys a little titulated, lol. I'll admit, it gets me going every time.

The first paragraph almost always gives a bit of history about how long it took but it's finally here and we're excited..

By the middle of the 2nd paragraph, though, things start taking a turn for the worse, lol. We start to see phrases like "needs a little ironing out" start to appear; quickly followed by "the form factor is a little lacking". By the 4th paragraph the reviewer is struggling and clearly quite bitter. Phrases like 'at least it's got USB and a memory card slot!

' become commonplace.

If we make it to a 5th paragraph, the author nearly always makes a statement like "Yeah, maybe we DON'T have thousands of apps yet for the droid tablets...but WHO THE FUCK NEEDS ALL THOSE APPS, ANYWAY!!!!???"

By the end of the article the awkwardness and tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. There's disappointment in the air and you feel truly bad for the guy.

I already fear the day when a small group of retards think it would be a great idea to run Android OS on an iPad, and so it begins.

I'm completely open to buying a non-Apple tablet device whenever something presents itself that is truly better and not just an alternative for Apple haters.

That's why I went searching the reviews; to make sure I'm not missing out on something.

I'm not.

I have some hope for HP. WebOS has always looked pretty good to me, if they can manage to get the form-factor right (a touchscreen slab with no sliding keys gimmicky shit) I'd seriously consider making the jump to the phone. The tablet looks really good too, if they can bring it to market soon with a competitive price - but in response to those needs every apple competitor is saying

I certainly had hope for HP with their Slate, but they have some serious catching up to do...

Their TouchPad is getting a lot of press, but I'm not seeing anything in the specs that makes it a true differentiator.

The only hope is that the IT Departments of the world will latch on because of the Exchange integration; not to mention native versions of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.

However, the iPad has been steadily making it's way into business after business on a pretty major scale. The initial complaints have kinda been silenced because:

a. Connection with Exchange is now pretty robust, and only going to get better. Here's an article from April:

I believe 1 or 2 of the drawbacks have since been resolved.

b. No one is creating an Excel document on an iPad or tablet device. The need to have the Office suite on an iPad has pretty much been rendered a moot point. There's at least a dozen apps that can view any Microsoft-created document (Goodreader is my fav). You can even edit and save and send if you really need to...

c. Android OS is a fantastically frantic open sourced moving target that scares the SHIT out of IT Departments. Even more so than Apple products, if that's even possible. Our IT guys LOVE LOVE LOVE all things Android. For their own home use.

And if you think iPad's Exchange integration is bad? Take a look at the Android OS. *shudder*

Again, this is where the HP stuff and WebOS could make some inroads. But, if Microsoft mobile platform history is any indication of performance, Apple can rest easy. When those first PocketPC phones appeared on the market ages ago, the business community was set on FIRE. They were so excited and immediately jumped in head first. What happened? WRETCHED exchange server integration, horribly buggy OS that often refused updates, and performance so bloated that employees stopped using the devices outright. When the BlackBerry came along, it was the end for mobileOS, lol.

What the iPad has going for it - be it on the business or consumer level - is that it's a ROCK SOLID platform. Rock. Solid.

I hope this is ok to say in here……

I'm looking forward to getting a Macbook Air. I feel the many man hours I've spent swiping a touch screen is no longer exciting, and more importantly not very productive in a big picture sort of way. At best it's a tool as part of a bigger package but not quite at the level of doing everything itself just yet. It's nowhere near a full production machine and I still don't like using the screen keyboard.

Still my 15" MBP feels like a tank now so I think a Macbook Air is going to make a great middle ground and lap buddy.

Exactly right. I don't think the specs really play that big a role, it's all about the platform. HP has a chance with WebOS to do something great with the it. I haven't handled one but I thihnk the platform looks promising. Hopefully it can at least stimulate Apple to make some improvements to iOS like notifications and some kind of customized home screen. The Windows tiles are pretty sweet, but I would be extremely hesitent to pick up a MS product based on their track record.
