Yes. There's all kinds of things you can do to it: modulations, fx per voice, destructive editing, reversing etc.
1ino1eum wrote:
- is there a compressor, can you do sidechain compression between maschine instruments/tracks ?
Yes, there is a simple compressor per voice and also a more advanced one as an effect. (There are two insert fxs per voice as well as per group and master). As far as side-chaining, there isn't side-chaining inside machine, but there are 8 outputs. So what I would do is side-chain outside of Maschine.

Maschine and Logic is great as well. The reason Maschine and Ableton are such a great combo is because Maschine is well suited for live performance and improvisation as well. And for me, it really frees me up to use more samples, fx and hits, and not have an outrageous number of tracks. I can limit myslef to 8 tracks but if one of those is Maschine, it takes care of all my drums and many other things, and the rest of my tracks are generally for midi instruments. I don't think it's redundant at all, it was a savior to my ultimate live setup.

Tkx buddha, I need to get my hand of one of those, to compare the possibilities against Sampler.
and also the 8 output ... I wonder if it's enough, I use sidechiained compressor everywhere more, than one instance per instrument usually.
cheers !

what about cpu?!
I read a post 2 pages before that on a mbp 2.16 the cpu usage in minimal. but at the NI forum I read that it takes a lot of cpu!!
I have a mb-unib and a mbp @ 2.4gh/4g ram. what do you think about standalone and vst/au in Live 8?
thnx

yes there where heavy CPU spikes during the beta 1,5 phase...
i find it fairly easy on my 2.16ghz / 4gb ram machine..., but i admit i don't have it for long enough to have used some real heavy projects yet with loads of effects and the like...
i am still growing in that respect myself with it, i only have it since a good month now i think, and i spend a fair bit of time building ultimate templates... cause i like it as a general controller for my 3 main used audio softwares as much as the maschine itself...

running 2 instances of maschine plugin in live 7,
my CPU running at around 15% for a quite empty live set and maschine projects.
macbook 2,4 ghz, 4gb ram. mac os X leopard.
if you overload your maschine with FXs on each PAD, each GROUP, and insert FXs, you may actually eat way more CPU
but your laptop will handle maschine within live without any problem mate.

I was a big fanboy of Maschine since the beginning, but some time ago I've realised there are too few advantages over Live's drum racks to invest 1,5 months of my work in it. Polish prices do suck.
And I have to quote a previous question... Why we haven't seen a groovebox-style hardware-software combo yet? Maybe a small hardware addon for Maschine?

Maschine is much more than Drum Racks and "too few advantages" is not even remotely accurate. There's the step sequencer for one, ability to record real-time automation in a session view environment, drag and drop patterns as audio or midi, hands-on mouseless operation of pretty much everything with the dedicated controller, including browsing sounds, previewing/loading sounds, sampling/slicing/zooming, sample mangling...etc.

What do you mean exactly by "groovebox-style hardware-software combo"? Maschine is much more than a groovebox but it certainly does the job as one.

For the step sequencer explanation, check the 2nd quote. Recording real-time automation is certainly THE feature that would sell it to me. Personally, I don't even find mouseless navigation that important, just because using shortcuts+trackpoint is a lot faster (though you have to learn the shorts), and some of the stuff has to be pre-programmed anyway, so what would be a difference between using maschine controller and programming my own preset for a different controller?
If u dunno what a trackpoint is - that's the red thingy on the pic. Awesome thing for everyday computer usage and having both hands on keyboard while using the mouse truly saves a lot of time !

That's something mentioned before - the layout of pads. I'm not a finger-drummer, I prefer using step-seq. The Maschine, with it's layout, simply wasn't good enough for me. Electribish-X0Xish horizontal layout is the thing I'm looking for. But that's me, and probably it's because I didn't have enough time to get used to the Maschine. (testing period)

but hell-motherf*cking-yeah i cant wait to get it, this thread made wet my pants several times in a row....seems that 1.5 is really kicking serious ass

well, i am sure you are not going to regret this, especially not in combination with live.

I guess it's just a matter of taste but just because the pads are laid out like the MPC doesn't mean you need to use it like one with finger drumming. The fact is that it does have a very fun and sophisticated step sequencer with visual feedback and personally I see no reason why having it laid out horizontal would make it any better. I find it to be more powerful than any "Electribish-X0Xish" hardware step sequencer out there.

Dude, this is the business. I've never been so impressed by the immediacy of a product; it set up in about 10 minutes (an hour, max, to get the 1.5 and content DL) and I was making beats within 20... after reading the manual! The sounds are fantastic - I've not even looked at the sampling elements yet as I've been playing with the stock sounds - and the interface is brilliant.
The hardware itself is some of the best I've ever used; solid and still refined. Well easy to get around, too; I've found I can happily operate it with one hand while baby sits on my knee. I've only made some silly hip-hop beats so far but I'm WELL impressed.
Thanks for pushing me in the right direction, guys! What 'cool stuff' should I learn how to do?
(NB* I'm letting go of LOADS of gear to pay for this. The Block is on eBay for £250 BIN if anyone wants it, along with some drum gear)

^^^ i am very pleased to hear that i did not made you waste money.
and i am glad that i did not exaggerated that it is the music product with the biggest impact and fun factor in the last 20 years
(at least i truly feel like that)
to your question... i don't know, i am still myself in the phase of digging deeper into it, i still feel i only scratched the surface...
but definitely check out the editor and the possibilities using it as a controller for other things then maschine itself, very, very powerful.
p.s. def check the note repeat function in conjunction with the fantastic velocity sensitivity of the pads, great to create very organic sounding drums.
