Heh. Jourgensen can also manage to put together a coherent statement without coming across as though he's Industrial music's answer to Sting.

Here's a timely little tidbit. I enjoyed some of this comments here.

Pitchfork: You've been on Arista, Sire, Warner, and Sanctuary. Did you have positive experiences with any of them?

AJ: No. None. They all suck.

At the very least, Al is entertaining. A bit of blather, but fun blather.

the one song you mention is over 10 years and more than 6 albums ago.

'nuff said.

I've been saying the same thing about old school hip hop for days now

nope. same answer, different question.

in both cases it's today's rap/NIN not being as good as the rap/NIN from the late 80s/early 90s.

NightTime was a great record.

Cobain lifted the gtr lick from 80's to "come as u are" me thinks.

Kurt must have ripped it consciously.

Night Time. Killer record. Most KJ fans hate it.

Hmm. For some reason I'm thinking of Manic Street Preachers at the moment. Fuckin' brilliant. Early. Mid. Late. All of it.

Manic Street makes a good sound. Funny, that KJ nighttime record is my fave, the others don't do much for me.

Any "Foetus" fans out there aka Jim Thurwell. This shit goes back to mid 80's too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXBGg8PzsU0 < wiseblood / Foetus - motorslug

saw him at the roxy in 85' with 10 freshly slaughtered pigs heads on stage hanging from wires. Trent borrowed A BUNCH from Thurwell.

funknotik wrote:I wonder sometimes how much music theory or serious musical knowledge people have on this forum. If you have a reasonably high level of music theory knowledge and you play an instrument like guitar, bass, piano whatever you can appreciate different styles of music more easily. NIN is really basic in terms of theory application, it's all power chords on guitar and minor scales. Some exotic scales pop up here and there but nothing too crazy. Timing is usually 4/4 accept in some songs like march of the pigs where you have that 7/8 then 4/4 timing. Nothing really mind blowing but it produces a pleasant dissonance that is difficult to achieve when your trying to over complicate things. Im a second year music student and I find the more I learn in terms of composition and theory the more I enjoy simplicity. I don't want Ynwgie Malmsteen type virtuosity on every fucking track, soloing out and shit. Anyway just wanted to lend some credibility to my argument on NIN. Thank you bitch, suck it dry..
Your arguments aren't even making any sense now.

Your argument invalidates itself. What I get from this is, You like rock music, anything outside of that is too strange for your fragile, sensitive, musically trained ears. You can handle it if it's a traditional musical element like 7/4 timing etc. and stays within the boundaries of pop music, but if it's not rock, then it lacks "testosterone", your lack of ability to challenge yourself on what music is, is a great argument against early music training.

The most valid reason to like NIN is because you like "edgy" pop, and the production level is high. The rest is trying to justify those two reasons with BS.
I listen to a variety of different music, I'm not going to go in to detail about it because frankly your opinion is worth very little to me. The point i'm, trying to make whether you go to school or not is that learning music theory and dedication to (any) instrument allows you to understand the language of music. Therefore to make assessment about a musicians musical skill or merit would require some level of understanding about the processes behind the creation. In other words if you don't play an instrument and you cannot speak the language of music. If you are musically illiterate, you cannot verbalize what reason you have for disliking a musician other than, it sounds "pop," or "you like it because it's edgy." To me thats utterly meaningless, your talking about him as a person, I could care less about his appearances on MTV or any other tv show, I haven't had a tv for 4 years... I have never had cable so I don't know what is happening on mtv. I don't care about genre categories like "pop, rock, electronic, meepy floop, gaycore, ballsak, etc etc. It means nothing to me, it's surface noise, it's the job of music journalists to write about those things. It seems like thats where your coming from as far as which band was doing what in 1991. So you know that the lead singer of (insert band name) pierced his testicles, before he performed a concert for 4 people in prague. I simply DO NOT CARE, talk about the fucking MUSIC! The bit about testosterone was just to fuck with you, I pushed buttons well though, it served it's intended purpose.

So from what Tone Deft says your musical forte is hating on NIN and talking about how much better some other bands are. And you know what thats great, if you wanna argue about the artists personality flaws, but I'm not going to be involved with that. I'm doing a project on music as a branch of mathematics, I experiment alot with just intonation and microtonal music. I'll let you know when I set up the website, you may find it interesting. I don't know maybe equal temperment tuning is too "pop" for you. As far as me being white and 20, wtf does that have to do with anything? What color or age would you prefer me to be and what difference would it make? The fact you had to resort to an ad hominem attack really means something... Thank you bitch suck it dry...

funknotik, thank you for reaffirming my faith in music literacy.

This all reminds me of a long conversation I had with an idiot about why Mozart is better than Radiohead. Chew on that one for a minute. I had to try and explain (and never really got the point across) as to why Mozart is better than Radiohead. Unbefuckinglievable.

kids...

consider this... when Trent released his first album, MW was a teenager soaking it all in, listening to Trent's contemporaries as a music fiend, as we all are music fiends. you're a 20 year old reading about history, he lived it. when Pretty Hate Machine was released you were shitting your diapers, sucking your momma's tit.

a year from now you'll look back at your 'bad ass' sophomore self and laugh. actually you probably are headed into your second year, you're just a freshman FFS.

for not going into a lot of detail you sure do go into a lot of detail.

that's retarded and elitist.

I find that these faux debates about the merits of someone else's music don't really inform my own creativity at all, but rather just get my mind stuck in a pretty negative, unproductive state. Has anyone else noticed this?
