Anyone have a clue what the best budget-minded electronic drum kit is? Every time I tried pricing one out it got really expensive really quickly.
Roland's TD3 is by far the best entry level kit, in my opinion and in many others. Yamaha's DTXplorer isn't all that far behind and quite a bit cheaper. I wouldn't buy anything less, really.
Every el cheapo kit I've tried, like Alesis, Medeli, Millenium and whatever, sports poor build quality and poor triggering. If you're gonna use the kit very little it might suffice but do try before you buy if you decide to go this route.
(There's a new Alesis kit out just now, that looks a bit better than the ones I've tried. Could be worth a look.)

It's a Roland HD-1 by the look of it. Very basic and ergonomically a bit awkward, but good build quality and as you say, quieter than other e-drum kits. And good for tight spaces. You can get a Yamaha DTXplorer for the same price though, that's why I didn't recommend it. But if noise and size is a big issue, it's a good starter kit.

Here is my space as a lovely panorama (thanks photoshop!).
Some items of interest: my keytaur, my giant bust of Bach (he's the best!) and Ichigo and Rukia guarding my left monitor. All-in-all the setup works for me although I want to install a 2nd display over by my piano at some point.

Carr Mercury. Bad ASS little amp. I had a pair of Hot Rod Deville's, but those bitches are LOUD. Sold those, this amazing little hand built amp has a built in attenuator, switch between 8, 2, 1/2, and 1/10th of a watt. Don't let the ridiculously small number put you off, it's not like playing through some Pig Nose or something. On 8 watts it's absolutely plenty loud, especially for a NY apartment.
I have a Neumann TLM103 and SM58 I use. But I pretty much exclusively record direct, I just play the amp for the sake of playing through an amp. Guitar Rig & Amplitube can't be beat for recording, but for jamming and just playing, nothing can touch a hand built tube amp.
