I'm shooting out portable recorders today
Being able to use the Zoom H2 and H4 as a quick and (not so) dirty USB mic including ASIO drivers is a very very nice touch when you're out with a laptop and don't want to carry around too much weight or care for lengthy interface and cabling setups.
HAL: I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. And I want to help you.

Killer feature, IMO.Crash wrote:Being able to use the Zoom H2 and H4 as a quick and (not so) dirty USB mic including ASIO drivers is a very very nice touch when you're out with a laptop and don't want to carry around too much weight or care for lengthy interface and cabling setups.
Is it the only one to do it?
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

i personally use the H2, i guess they're both pretty much on the same level regarding the sound quality - besides a hardware design flaw concerning the H4 that leads to crosstalking of the blinking led that gets recorded as clicks when used in battery mode. this does ot happen with connected power adapter.
unfortunately this can only be fixed by redesigning the circuit board, last time i checked zoom confirmed this problem but there was no statement yet if there will be a new revision or not.
anyway, to me the size of the H2 was more appealing, i don't need XLR and phantom power, only a small jack and plugin power for my okm mics and the quality is better than every minidisc i tried years ago.
the interface design is, uhm, ok. by no means perfect but i've seen worse.
the buttons are plastic membrane keys - dislike them, but for the price i will not argue... isn't it even cheaper than an ipod?

That's why I bought mine at Conrad Electronic and chose the 48 months warranty for 13 Euros that they offer. I don't trust the plastic membrane keys and don't want to waste my H2 after two years only because those keys don't react anymore.dom wrote:the buttons are plastic membrane keys - dislike them, but for the price i will not argue...
BTW, I'm using an old but useable small photocamera tripod for the H2, works like a charm.

Hrmmm. I wonder about this cheapie/simple Tone 6 device:

I like the idea of cheap and no interface to mess with, but singing into a sideways mic seems weird, and I wonder if it sounds as decently as the Zooms...
