that's terrible man.
I'm gonna say running is *probably* not the best idea, but beating people up isn't cool.
but chasing a guy who's running away and then getting shot by the gun he was running to grab is also uncool....
So i can see where this can be a dark gray area where the law wins.

Damn, that does suck.
A few months back the police were called to my friend's house by the neighbors because him and his wife were having a loud argument and slamming doors. The police roughed him up pretty good even though he never laid a finger on her and the police's overreaction was probably due to the nature of the call and the fact he lived in a bad neighborhood with lots of violence.
I can understand why you ran based on past experience but that probably put the police in high gear based on their past experience but that doesn't justify the reaction.
I could never be a cop. It's so much more than serving and protecting and I'd probably snap too and overreact with people constantly pushing your limits all day long.

Sounds like they were trespassing to me but, I have no clue about German law.

it's also one of those job's where you are NEVER off duty. Something goes down, it's your responsibility to do something.
this is also probably linked to their poor decision making....

The beating up part is not cool, but dood, you ran. I have a police friend and he told me and the worst thing anyone can ever do is run. Immediately it is a red flag you are :
a. carrying weapons
b. carrying something illegal
c. a wanted felon
d. all of the above
I dunno, the cops shouldn't beat you up, but you shouldn't run, if you never ran the cops wouldn't have beat you up.

I don't see that as the case here. I can not read German and know even less about their laws but, a person running towards their home in fear is far from fleeing the scene of a crime. There was no reasonable cause for the officers to give chase; they knew were he was but, the victim obviously has reason to fear for his life. Now he has six more reasons to fear for his life. Six officers against 1 person on private property with no reasonable cause is excessive force. Many officers in the US are learning about this.
Just one interpretation; there are usually multiple sides to the story but, if the victims’ facts are inline then I would have to side with him.

Thanks for the tip - unfortunately there is no legal aid available for civil lawsuits - if I lost I'd have extra costs and I'm on a low income. I'm still paying off my lawyer in installments and other costs from the first time I was beaten up in 2005! I even had to pay damages to one of the officers for *damaging his clothes with my blood*!!! (although I have to admit I didn't go to that particular court case - so I automatically lost)

Cops are generally operating on reduced brain function, so if you run their primitive instincts kick in and they have to chase you.
A lot of them are just waiting for it...

Of course they're not. It's not easy you know to recount this stuff.
The compact version is that I was beaten up by Police *again* last saturday night. A Police car stopped beside me just as I had got home. They wanted to do a Bike check. My previous experience didn't help and I suddenly panicked and ran to the entrance of where I live. I was really scared because I had already been badly beaten up by Police for *no reason*! and wanted to avoid that happening again.
I didn't manage to stop them getting in. Initially there were two officers there but very quickly there were more. It all happened very quickly - again no chance given to explain anything. They immediately began hitting me and even smashing my head with a trungeon (I got stitches later in hospital for four head wounds - the police reported just *one* head wound). Somehow I managed to get to my appartment (I repeat *without* smashing back in return - I just pushed my way out of them).
By this time there were over six police officers there! The attack didn't stop! I shouted for help the whole time too. Thank god a neighbour came down and that really helped - the police calmed down but even threatened my neighbour too: because he was preventing police from carrying out their *work*!!!!
Eventually, an ambulance arrived and I was given first-aid and taken to hospital where I was treated and my injuries were stitched.
I have cuts and bruises all over my body, serious injuries to my head and I'm scared to go outside!! I doubt I'll be going out tomorrow night!
This is just stupidity on both sides

stupid stupid stupid. Although you were stupid, you still were slightly more in the right than them , so sue their buttocks.

By his own account:
Cops pull up
He runs because of his past
Cops don't know his past, now they have to engage because he is running
I am not saying the cops should ever beat someone up, but bottom line is: He ran! If he didn't run I don't think any of this would have happened.
To OP, hope you weren't hurt, and are recovering. But, don't ever run.

I tried to get back to the Nebuchadnezzar, but my mobile phone credit was empty and I couldn't make my connect call. I should have reversed the charge!!!
