Do you have the 2008 version with the Boot Time update? Gives you the ability to change the size of the MFT reserved space and to place it where you want. If I understand this correctly, this actually can 'buy back' several gigs of space. The MFT (Master File Table) I think is usually set to around 12% of a HD's capacity. In my case thats 50gigs. The manual suggests that this is Waaaaayy overkill. I have to clarify it further, but my current understanding is that I would be fine with only 10% of this, giving me another 45gigs of usable space on my 500gig HD's.

Also, it appears that by using UD you don't have to worry so much about leaving the 10-20% free space thing in order for the defragging process to work. That's again even more usuable space, anywhere between 20-40 gigs on 500gig HD's.

does this app have any tangible effect on performance, or are you just using it to claw back some space?

To be honest, it is early stages for me. I took notice of your interest in any benchmarks but couldn't find any, let alone think of how to bench mark it myself. You are right to say I will not notice any performance increase with the new quad. In reality I am such a lite user of the machine, it barely registers a heart beat when I am using it for music or solid modeling. I have duplicated all of my app's on the P4 laptop plus a bunch more, as it is also my internet machine. As time goes by maybe I will notice something.

I think I am OC disorder  about housekeeping and order. Maybe I got sucked in to it being nice, but not neccesary.

oh its always fun to tinker. im always interested in these things, most of them are snake oil, but sometimes something really useful comes along. PC nerds search for 'performance gains' like guitar nerds search for 'tone'!
