ah, yeah

i think i see. as stated, the isue isnt so much that you cannot record more than one take...it is that a button must be pressed at the end of every take.

a valid point, since i do it in logic all of the time and logic is arguably less 'loop based'

I just keep recording into one clip, then when I am done I set the clip braces to the correct 'cycle length' (eg 8 bars) - and then simply pressing the up and down arrows selects the 'takes'

because it moves the braces by a 'cycle length'
Yes this is what I thought originally but then I realised this is about being able to assemble a composite of all the different takes.

One way I guess you’d do it in Live 8 would be:

Create group track for comping with any effects on the master
Loop section in arrangement mode
Record multiple passes
Cut to length and place each pass in a separate audio track in the group
Cut up each segment and copy to blank audio track
Extend clips to overlap and create crossfades
Mute all but the compiled audio track

Would this work? Could it be simplified? Maybe a max patch could automate some or all or this process.

I guess the new method of warping the waveform around the timeline will make more sense when trying to correct slight timing errors too. And it should sound better.

Haven't you guys done comping with multiple takes before?

Session view is NOT ideal for this as yes, you can put each take in a seperate clip if you enable each clip to record on each pass, but that's kind of a PIA isn't it, and then how are you supposed to comp easily. Yes, you can then copy clips, drag to arrange, and then set the tracks to comp, but hardly an elegant solution! Check out how Logic or Cubase does this...seriously, you owe it to yourself to see how other programs are handling this...much more efficiently and easily done...and it's a pretty important and basic functionality for people who are recording analog instruments.
Yes, you can use loop bracket in arrange, continue recording, unfold the audio, manipulate the loop brace, cut these into segments, arrange then on concurrent tracks, and then FINALLY go about comping but cleary this is also a PIA!
The looper sounds like it might do the trick...maybe the Abes should include a comping multiple takes option as a preset or something...that would be VERY cool!
I just get kind of tired of doing workarounds, although at least now with folder tracks the arrangement pane will be easier to deal with...
Again, i want to be clear that I am really acknowledging the Abes for addressing so many issues...I just feel that this is a REALLY important feature that seems to be getting overlooked, and it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to implement. Maybe the looper...

Get Reaper... it is relatively cheap and has pretty good takes and comping. It can be set up as templates for your usual recording situations and ready to go in no time. Then bring the audio into Live if you want.

I suggested something else:
- or one long take into arrangement view, it should take just a few seconds to split it up into segments Confused
-note how this *doesn't* involve the loop brace - just start one long recording into arrangement view - it's not "comping", it's something else.

I think once one lets go of the old paradigms of working the process becomes MUCH easier. Instead of wanting the software to be some other piece of software.

I really want to see comping as a feature too. Yeah it's possible in live, but it's much easier and faster in other daws. I think live should add this feature for audio AND midi.

this is something I really miss in live (since I changed to live 6 from cubase a long time ago)

I think he was refering to how logic does this. You can easily create a composite clip with the best segments of each take. that is indeed awesome. With live you can do this as well but it takes more work. I usually choose the best take, and then if there's a part that didn't sound so good, I split it and replace it with the same part from another take manually (using the clip start/loop points). it's not as great as logic's way but it gets the job done.

I agree 100% with OP, a more full-blown "feature" to make comping multiple takes of arrangerview tracks would be useful--the current easiest way is to loop record, split, recompose on multiple tracks, etc. Live 8's group tracks are one step closer, and certainly the crossfades between clips give a whole new level of legitimacy to comping together tracks from multiple takes, but it could stil get better eg Logic, Cubase, etc. The great thing in Ableton (and with the forums) is that there is always a way of getting something done, but this fairly common, repetitive, and tedious task could be more smoothly integrated in the next round, and I bet it will--the groundwork is laid with group tracks and crossfades...
