it's not an opinion, it's fact. read the wikipedia entry, there's nothing more to it. I really like it but there's no mystery to it.

Buzby is referring to a well know acoustic phenomenon, called "beating" which can be applied towards "entrainment" of the brain - i.e., the beat pulse that results from two tones close together is lower in frequency than we can usually perceive, thus allowing the tones to "beat" as frequencies below 10 Hz, which can alter consciousness.

Music Therapists study such things.

Check out this book on Cymatics... awesome stuff.

"Water Sound Images: The Creative Music of the Universe".

Cheers,
Brian

damnit, how can we have these arguments if people post useful info like that?!?!?

I'll go look into it.

edit - OK, yeah, cool stuff. I've loved watching videos like this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iXY2BE1S8Q
on the topic. that stuff always goes through my head at concerts, walking about listening to the dead and hot spots in the room.

agreed, I can see this stuff getting seriously metaphysical hippy dippy Santa Cruz.

no disrespect but im not into solid facts about anything

everyone has a opinion or knows something that someone else does nt about a subject and im up for listening to those opinions - even if i dont share those opinions then i try to respect that someone has an angle on something which i may not be able to empathize with

but i would try not to tell them that it is rubbish or wrong - even your opinion - im not saying it is wrong, but that right now i dont share it ..

omfg.

you simply got your terms mixed up. I do commend you on a properly closed mind.

haha - just saw that you are from SF - like i said, im not into the presentation of such things in the santa cruz manner - without wanting to generalize about people in cruz - but yeah - in my opinion there are a fair share of fruit loops living there

what i dont like about things being presented in that manner is that it tends to make everything very cosmic - not my cup of tea

anyways - without diverting too much i was hoping that someone would offer some advise on how to make such recordings - the sound frequency types which result in 2 frequencies producing a beat type pulse

....which will fly me off to never never land and put me in direct contact with the great spirit to receive divine knowledge so that i can announce myself as the chosen one to lead us out of the forth coming new world order being implemented by the new governing powers of the US

;) HEHE - santa cruzey enough for you ?

like i said - no disrespect man - thanks for the input

sorry if i got my terms mixed up

easy to do with emails and other written material

no need to accuse me of having a closed mind - shall we close this line of conversation here ?

id like to see if anyone can help me with the original question of the thread

thanks

hey brian

any suggestions on how to make these?

thanks

funny guy.

I know more than to stereotype, Santa Cruz can be like that, depends on what you want to find. it is an all around pretty 'crunchy' town.

how to explore this stuff? Operator with sine waves would be a good source. I think it's sine0 that's the purest sine wave, the others have intentional artifacts to them.

with beat frequencies, the tempo of the beat is equal to the number of Hz those two signals are out off by. IOW a 100 Hz sine wave 'beating' with a 99Hz sine wave will result in a beat tone that oscillates at 1Hz.

lower frequencies are more subjective to where you are in the room and are more prone to induce nausea.

maybe some really slow envelopes on Operator, vary the frequency very slightly over time, do that with a handful of them playing at once, it could be pretty cool.

thanks - appreciate the help

im gonna get operator when i upgrade in to live 8 suite

i know cruz isnt "all" like that - i had a great time there

would this be the same in the Reason synths ?

i guess so

sure. I'm not familiar with Reason but if you can find a nice pure sine wave, it should give some pleasing results. square waves could be interesting but they have a LOT of harmonic content (extra signals, extra tones) to them.

funny, this got me thinking, I'd like to try this when I get home tonight, my chakras are out of line with the 7th house of the virgo, I can feel it in my aura, it's like totally bumming me out man.

that's really cool you got to travel to see Santa Cruz, home of the Banana Slugs!!

Sine waves are the easiest way to generate "beats. E.g., a tone at 1000Hz and one at 1007 Hz. Panning them left and right. It gets trickier with more complex tones... Operator is great at such things, just use one oscillator with a fixed frequency for each tone.

ooooh man - you is in a bad way ;) glad we injected some humour into this - thought it was going to turn into an argument for a moment there

errr - are you seriously thinking of having a go at this when you get home - id like to hear what you make
