I'd have to say that intelligent and creative women, of any nationality, are #1 for me for pure beauty.

nominated for 2 Original songs and Springsteen doesn't even get nominated for his song in the Wrester? Bullshit.

I have a feeling the US government forced them to give Slumdog all the awards to strengthen ties with the East.
Haven't seen 'The Wrestler' yet (really looking forward to it, though) so can't comment on the Springsteen track. But if the US really wanted to show some bias towards Far East cinema then surely nominating a proper Bollywood film would have been a better way of doing it? However...

Is this the argument that we should appreciate it on the basis of being an homage?

To answer, no, I haven't seen more than a few. Guess I just don't like chick-flicks.

I enjoyed the first half of Slumdog Millionaire, but yeah the love story was so cheesy it makes it hard for me to see the justification in all the oscars it got. Good soundtrack though and some great visuals (as always with Danny Boyle's films)
Personally I thought The Wrestler was a better movie, altough obviously they are not really comparable cause they're so different. It definitely did more with less which I can admire. I found it incredibly funny and deeply moving at the same time.
And why the hell was The Dark Knight not nominated for best movie anyway?

cause batman talks like he's pretending to be a life long smoker.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

Word! He sounded like 20 cubanas and a 2 bottles of whisky every night.. and that for felt like 2 hours at the end of that flick.. most disappointing end of a movie ever (in 2008 ;).

I liked it. What's weird is that even though they were trying to show how difficult life is for those kids, it still seems very sugar coated and Disney-esque. The kids were super cute though. Soundtrack was decent. It was cool hearing MIA in there.

that track is for wankers, THE annoying song of the summer of 2008. it reminds me of a Cheryl Crow jingle.

***spoilers below***

good movie but once you catch onto the writing it's too predictable. a guy keeps getting fucked over by his brother over the same girl and/or money. it was way too obvious what the final question would be.

it's not as retarded as Forest Gump winning over Pulp Fiction, but it was definitely a vote for the masses.

2008 was a sucky year but the movies were pretty damn good.
