flame me if u want, but i started w/ a cracked version of live... had no clue it was cracked... i bought it for 50 bucks off e-bay, and YES i still had no idea of what cracked software was at the time... i thought it was just really cheap, because 3 months prior to that, i purchased a legit version of reason 2.5 license and all for $150... this was when i first discovered e-bay and went on a buying frenzy building my studio including an asr-x pro, midisport, etc... i figured a popular program like reason was cheap as 150 bucks, this unknown software must be really cheap... i don't know what pushed me to buy live to be honest... i think i may have read a magazine review or saw someone talking about it in a forum...long story short it crashed, and i bought it legit...i knew i was gonna go legit before it crashed b/c i knew i wanted to upgrade after i started getting a feel for it...

this is the point - a minority of people will appreciate it (using a crack) and eventually do the right thing and buy, but as Abletoff used a heroin analogy here's one of mine - how many junkies would pay for a fix if they could just keep getting it for free???? I'm pretty sure a similar percentage of crack/warez users would eventually pay. And while I agree that stealing/raping/pillaging has been a major factor in the history of the Western world, that if we just allowed this to happen unpunished, it would just be anarchy with everyone fighting and robbing and killing each other. Which is why we have laws and consequences for such behaviour, so if you are running a crack, you can't have an issue with 'you do the crime, you do the time (or fine)'. Play with fire, you might get burned. This could be financially, or through your computer getting messed up and requiring hard drive reformatting etc. As for the original computer hackers doing this as a way of gaining experience and knowledge - well that works for me to the point of a overcoming a personal challenge, but when that programmer starts trying to sell his/her warezed version, or even distributing it for unpaid usage, that the same play with fire you might get burned rule applies.

And if you come on here seeking advice and technical support with your cracked copy, if you know it is cracked and are proud to boast about it, then you should still be taken into an alleyway and beaten stupid with a large stick with a blunt, rusty nail ... :D

how does using a crack really affect anyone....legit users or not.

If your legit you obviously have nothing to worry about, ableton did get as big because of cracks......

it could hurt or help....just like the pirated music issue

pirated music gets more exposure, exposure is good.

Not really trying to justify anything here but I felt it should be known that I wouldn't have had any intention of purchasing Live 8 Suite if I hadn't gotten used to the cracked version a while ago. There are a lot of people out there who do use cracked software to get intimate with a product before they buy it. I did the same thing with zebra and sylenth and know I'm doing it with Live 8. Again, its not a justification but the fact remains that I wouldn't be bothering with Live at all if I didn't happen to have the cracked version to fiddle with all this time. Maybe I'm the only one but ableton did gain at least one customer because of pirate software.

Okay, if that is your opinion you should ask your boss if you can work for free in the future, you dont need the money for the hard work you put in your daily job i guess?!

Oh no we will all pay our bills with sand i guess!? Lets use others peoples hard work without paying for it?! Lets listen to stolen music, lets go to concerts for free, the artists dont need the money! Lets go to forums and be a part of the community without paying for it because the hole world is for free?.... If you still thinks its okay to use others ideas and hard work without paying for it you are a fool!

Off course it will affect us all in the long end! If all the people on this board was thinking like you, you would not even be here on the board because there would not be one, you got that? I pay for your stupidness........

If people have easy access to cracks, some may buy, but most won't. When software companies get paid (enough) for their work, they have more incentive to lower the price, but if they don't make enough money, it makes it harder and harder to afford development, causing release and update delays (not getting paid enough -> can't pay as many employees as you need -> less employees, less efficiency -> more time spent on work by fewer people).

Here's something I wrote in another forum when this same type of subject came up:

"Consider where you want to be...if you're making any kind of digital content for sale (movies, music, software, etc.), expect your income to be directly affected by cracks and torrents. There may be very low cost involved in electronic distribution, but that doesn't mean there wasn't any real time put into development, time just like the time your parents put into going to work to earn money to support you - those developers are people who have children to support, just like your parents did with you, and if they developed software as a hobby in their free time and didn't share it, we'd all be hurting and this wouldn't even be a discussion because you can't crack hardware."

without people using cracked copies I probably wouldn't give classes on Live. The people that really get into it buy it sooner or later because the cracks don't work after some time.

Still it felt wrong to give classes to someone who had a macbook pro bought by his dad and a cracked copy of live including sampler and operator while I myself could only afford a macbook and the basic Live-license without operator and sampler.
But the kid didn't know shit about music and probably gave up later anyways.

there was a time u could make the live demo save fully working sets thanks to a bug.

that was a hack i found and didnt have to write any code
