Since you are using a Mac I would definately recommend you also consider Apogee's soundcards.

Apogee's AD/DA converters and preamps are really nice, and they work flawlessly on Macs with the Agere chipset.

Apogee...pricey!

a repeater cable is basically like an extension cord for firewire, it just needs to be a relatively good specced one to work well
