I found this:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ZEDR16
Allen & Heath Zed R16
It is not exactly what I want and it is expensive but it is a step in the right direction. It is a full analog mixer (with apparently good preamps) and has a bunch of midi controls on it. Also the main faders can also be switched to being midi faders. on top of this it is a reasonaly high quality firewire interface with up to 28i/o

Good find. If all the controls were MIDI mappable then we'd have a winner that can serve double duty!

not possible sadly. Only the faders:
ZED-R16 is equipped with a host of MIDI control options. As well as the 4 dedicated MIDI faders, 12 rotary controllers, 12 switches, and 5 dedicated transport switches, all channel faders can also be switched to become MIDI faders.

mayby you better can buy 1 or 2 firewire audio interfaces with both 8 outs and buy a analog audio mixer.
route all the channels to seperate outs....there you go.

The way i play live is to use 3 different controllers.
One for the faders, one for the mutes and one for the effects etc...

2 x Novation Remote Zero's will give you 16 channels with a fader, 2 rotaries + 5 buttons (mutes, solo etc) per channel. Or 2 BCR2000's plus a couple of nano controls. Mount them all into 1 massive easy to carry box and you will get something like you are after.

people keep posting multi $k solutions which defeats the point. For those kinds of money I could have an engineer build a custom midi controller to my specs using midibox platform.
Another new product that looks ok (but only six channels) is the Vestax VCM600
http://www.vestax.com/v/info/newsevent/detail.php?id=42
It's $900 though and I think that is double what it should be sold for..
Maybe two of these, a monome and faderfox or two would be a good combo but then you are in stupid money land again.
I really want someone like Akai/Korg/Vestax to do this since they have the means to get cost down in bulk, manufacture their own custom UI elements etc. If I do this on my own it will cost me a lot of money for the prototype.
