depends really - for dj use the less melody/key that's detectable the less it matters what stuff you play together. if you're looking for ultra precise key detection for tuning a production it may not be perfect, but for dj mixes it's fine. i have found pretty often that it's key detection with rhythm/percussion tracks works pretty well, even when i would have thought there wasn't much 'key' to detect :)

i haven't seen much by way of comparison lately - probably because there isn't that much to choose between them. a few years ago RE were calling out mik for poor key results, but later updates seem to have solved most of the issues.

I use it for reference rather than as a guide - yes its nice to get completely seamless mixes with long transitions, or even completely layer/mash tracks, but personally I find religiously sticking with harmonic mixing throughout a set saps the attitude/energy from it - its good to clash a litle at times - keeps it interesting :)

Very useful tool to have around though, but its too easy to get obsessed with it and forget to just use your ears to decide what works and what doesnt, also even just because a couple of tracks are appaently key and beat compatible - it doesnt mean they are actually going to mix well, however it is really useful to narrow down the choice of link tracks that you may end up using to progress between the main tracks of a set.
Nothing to see here - move along!

rapid evolution works well for me. although recently i've become a fan of ugly dirty transitions again so i dont really use it at all.

i've realised its all about track selection. i dont care that much anymore if two songs are 10-20 bpm apart. but then i'm not playing straight up minimal or tech house sets.

I use Mixed in Key 3.1 and I like but here are my issues

I always back up my track before I use MIK cause sometimes it converts my song name to Chinese!

anybody had that experience?

and sometimes it tells me my song is two unrelated keys in those cases I play my guitar along with the song and decide the key for myself

other that that its good I mean it saves me hundreds of hours of figuring the key out myself

I found my ears get tired and I started keying songs wrong MIK was well worth the money

I use it too.

Great for getting ideas for mashups.

Great for early "mood" sets.

Great for giving you ideas on where to go next.

BUT, once the night is in full force don't be chained to it. More important to pick the right song for the crowd than restricting selection to acceptable MIK parameters.

I love the software, before anything sees my dj software it gets run through MIK. Use it, don't let it use you.

Just a quick reply:

anyone looking for a brief explanation of harmonic mixing (and the Camelot wheel), check out this easy-to-follow website: http://www.harmonic-mixing.com/

As someone brand new to DJing w/ Live, I look forward to trying out HM and the above website did a good job of introducing me to the basic ideas involved in the technique.

The Chinese characters are most likely caused by faulty ID3 tags in the file. You can use iTunes or if you're on a PC any number of freeware ID3 tag editors to convert the ID3 tags to version 2.3 and/or use a different encoding format ie ASCII or Latin-1. I'm not entirely sure if the encoding format change will help, but I believe that is the root of the problem. If you ctrl click on a track in iTunes and choose convert ID3 tags you will see the different options I am talking about. Play around with some different formats and it may help. Most often you will find that this problem is limited to tracks from a certain source. I know addictech.com was reported to us once as having tracks with this problem.

And yes, you can email us too, we do have excellent support ;)
