True, true. But they are ever so polite when doing so...

Sound proofing or lower volumes FTW.
Totally and utterly correct.

Funktion one PA (my favourite) powered the main stage at Glastonbury, were forced to turn their volume right down making the crowd to go elsewhere, even though it was ambient noise at the festival that caused the sound level readings to be so high.

Had all stages been told to turn volumes down, Funktion one could have at least given the audience a half-decent demonstration of their sound.

Personally, I think the volume restrictions are set too low and it's councils who should change their tune.

so there was this great little bar that did shows for years and years. right next door this big building gets built with expensive lofts for sale. people start buying up the lofts next to the loud little bar that was already there. people then complain to the authorities about the loud little bar THAT WAS THERE FIRST. bar has legal battles that are costly, in the end they put up a sound dampening blanket at the front door and can only have quieter acts play.

bull f***ing shit if you ask me.

the world makes me very angry sometimes.

120db is loud...
still...it's an installataion in which as I understand the volume is very dynamic...
anal bastards...

yeah, put people out of their homes so you can use the space one night a week.

homes are more worthwhile than clubs.

just got a mail from the festival director. they going to sort it out somehow...the sun is shining again...

( and yes, 120dB is loud if you think of 1 kHz, but if you like to have some impressive low end and then there is a 96 dB limit, enforced by a brickwall limiter, or by a pumping compressor is not such a nice perspective.... )

Here's a sound pressure level chart showing various measurements

http://www.sengpielaudio.com/TableOfSou ... Levels.htm

however, I don't think it's quite right in that it doesn't really go into sound quality i.e. distortion is more likely to make listening more uncomfortable than a clearly reproduced signal.

distortion doesn't matter in SPL readings.

no, but much louder signals can be listened to with relative comfort.

the chart puts 120 db as the threshold of discomfort when it's definitely much higher than that when the signal is clearly reproduced.

I have heard that spl's of 147 db have been comfortably listened to and taking into account that an increase of 12db is roughly twice the perceived volume, it gives you an idea of how much louder things can actually go.

not exactly.

~6dB is a doubling of power, not 12db.
20 * log(2) = 6.02dB.

147dB is the threshold of pain, where are you getting this BS?

In Switzerland, we have a federal law for decibel (and laser) limit in public events.

here in Israel it's 115 if I remember correctly...though no one enforces it..

How about:
~3dB for double the power.
~6dB for double the amplitude. (say, Voltage)

it's the other way, right?
6dB for power, 3dB for voltage.

reason is that power = V^2/R, the ^2 goes in front of the log so 10*log(gain) becomes 20*log(gain)

I hate logs.
