In short there's a big fooking difference between a spirits drinker and a beer drinker. Of course you can take anything to an extreme but your more likely gonna be fooked on spirits than just beer
Wrong. It's that attitude that gets people into trouble.
An ex of mine died from cirrhosis four years ago; she was of the opinion for years that "it's only beer- it's not a problem". By the time she finally got the fallacy in that argument, it was way too late. Have you ever seen anybody die of liver failure? I have, and it's not pretty...

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! as I said more likely.
Ah- no. Have you lived through it? I have. Have you ever been a counselor in a substance abuse program? I have.
I'm speaking from experience gained the hard way; both by living through it myself and helping others get their lives back on track. You, on the other hand, are talking out your ass.

Statistically not true, but then - you've kind've painted yourself in a corner in terms of this argument.

I'll stand corrected then. But there was no need to be rude.
Mabybe if your original advise:
"Don't worry too much about it. You sound like one of the many thousands of British binge drinkers. Start worrying when you want a drink in the morning, getting done repeatably for drink driving and your hitting the hard stuff." wasn't so full of shit, then ewistrand would not have been so harsh on you. You obviously know very little about alcoholism.

FWIW - alcohol is the great 'yes' drug, so it makes sense that you continue once you get started. Have a drink, then have the thought: "do I want another?" Answer: YES. So it's not particularly unusual that you drink this way - most people do, in my experience.
The question is: do you want to change this behaviour? Things to consider include the fact that it is very unlikely (and no fun) to try and control your drinking (see above). It is much easier to abstain for most of us.
I'm taking a few years away, as I have before. At least three. And then I'm going to buy a big ass bottle of very good Cognac, and play with some of the toys that three years of not drinking (@ $300.00 per month) has allowed me to buy. It's good to put the cash you have saved aside, even in jar as a reward, rather than fritter it away on rent and food. I see a modular synth my future.
Some even heavier drinkers need to abstain absolutely, for life, and likely need AA or another support system. I don't seem to be in that club - you'll have to decide that for yourself.
In any case - take it easy on yourself.
My .02,
e.

No need to be rude. My post meant well. Shit I could have kept this going if i wanted to but I was the bigger man and stood down. You cant fooking let it go.
Nothing personal I blame your bad upbringing. knut
I've found that people who attempt to "define" at what level problem drinking can be considered alcoholism (i.e., "Don't worry too much about it. You sound like one of the many thousands of British binge drinkers. Start worrying when you want a drink in the morning, getting done repeatably for drink driving and your hitting the hard stuff, etc. - blah, blah, blah") need to look at
their own drinking.

Yes, and I know that when you start suspecting you might need help you pronbably do, and that's a good thing, means you're ready to start to try and change, and change doesn't happen overnight. Look at it like this: Get a proffesional opinion, they're busy enough, if they don't think you need help they're not going to tell you you do.
Whatever you end up doing, best of luck!

Actually i dont think your anywhere near as bad as you think....
firstly you realise you potentially have a problem, the fact you recognise this is good and the next step is just taking control of your urge to drink yourself to oblivion. You need to learn your limit thats all.
Im not going to pretend i know anything about addictions as being a self proclaimed control freak I just stop when i feel like im not in control and that can be after just 1 drink....yes i am a cheap date!!
You mentioned about not affecting anyone else...thats probably not strictly true, its just maybe your friends dont feel they have the right to say anything to you.
I hate being around drunk people (friends or strangers)....they are unpredictable, they can be sociable one second then trying to glass someone the next. You might not notice the fact that some of your friends would prefer not to go out with you for a drink....
One of the guys at a factory i worked in years ago was an alcoholic, he would come back from a lunch time session absolutely fuked, apart from the fact he drove to the pub and back he then operated lethal machinery. I was scared for him and for my colleagues yet no one would do anything about it as he was also the bosses son! I stood up to him one day when he was having a go at a young girl, he wouldnt even acknowledge that he was drunk and could hardly stand up, thankfully his old man walked in just as he took a swing in slow motion like the movies (which was hilarious) and landed in a heap on the ground.
Everything in moderation mate, thats all you need to try and learn
Im going for a beer now....but just the one!!!
Good luck
