Yeah you get "bangs" and such from this ^ type of scenario or by having your Gate settings too extreme. So the "bang" could be your Gate suddenly opening/closing similar to the compressor example above.

Still, you said it was starting to happen in other songs so you're either making the same mistake over and over - possibly in the name of MAKE IT LOUDER like by pushing a compressor too far... Or something is amiss with your setup.
