Live 7.0.16 Suite

Because I can't afford the upgrade to Live 8 Suite since Ableton scrapped educational discounts on upgrades  and because the Cubase 5 update from SX3 was cheaper and needed more for me to work with other clientele and collaboraters.

I may have to hold out until Live 9 comes out to upgrade now, but 7 gives me what I want and is very stable. I enjoyed 8 and beta tested it from the start, so am sad I couldn't upgrade to it yet, but stability is still an issue anyway, although I'm sure that within a couple of months and one or two more bugfixes, it will be up to speed for 98% of users.

Whats the damage on that pricewise and painwise? Is it worth it? Maybe that should be a whole new thread (elsewhere) but I've been running SX3 for several years (first real production app). Ableton Live moved me in another direction with making (MIDI) beats but when it comes to live audio, especially vocals, I seriously end up back in Cubase almost every time.

Do you mind PM-ing me if its too much to get into here?... Seriously - I think you have the knowledge I seek. Besides I've seen your posts. I'd trust you over at least half the "reviews" on the internet.

A true "Wire" fan.

I'm working with 8 but it seems like the external midi timing got off with version 8. 7 seems to have better timing other than that I don't notice much bugs.

Live 8 Suite.03
I'm a completist. It's a disease. Why did I ever buy a car anyway? Think of all the plugins and software and shoes I could've had! :)
Seriously though warping is better, looper is cool, collision is very cool,
Everything you own comes in handy atleast once. For example, I've found multi band compression is handy for layered guitar loops recorded with a 57 since they can get too mid rangy.

However, as it's been said here before it's not what gear you have, it's how well you know your gear. To paraphrase some wise person; "Learn it, get to know it and exploit the s**t out of it!". The most well received track I've done was made with a Boss SP202 delaying the beat. The bass was broken, donated by a neighbor and the guitar had a peavey digital reverb pedal on it that a music store threw in with an amp. People dug it. That said, Live is the only non linear recording device I know of and has inspired me to feel about music the way I did as a kid. Live is the s**t. Even the free version.

I work on post production mixing/mastering, with some artists who already have Cubase 5, so exchanging files is easier and it's more convenient.

As much as I love Live, I still find that for heavy projects, I prefer to mix in Cubase. I actually love Cubase and Live for very different reasons, but I can only write and compose songs in Live, although Cubase has play order tracks which is non linear, nothing is as quick and easy and fun as building up a track in Live's Session view. And for my Umbriel Rising electronic music, I do 95% of that including mixing totally in Live.

I really am loving the Variaudio pitch correction and other new features in C5, such as the excellent Reverence convolution reverb which easily matches Logic's Space designer as a useful tool.
