Yes, correct, I'm on a PC and am using the Microsoft GS wavetable synth as the output for the O8.
Aside from physically plugging the speaker out directly into the microphone (i.e. Realtek soundcard), which sounds terrible, how do I route the soft synth to something ableton will recognize as an "audio in"? I only seem to be able to choose "ext in" for my "audio in" options.
Is an audio interface my only option? Do I really need to spend more money?
Thanks,

I don't think you can. Your Realtek soundcard has the GS wavetable synth embedded into it, and it only allows the audio of the synth to route out the speaker plug. The O8 is able to trigger the synth's sounds with MIDI (Live can do the same thing), but the audio of the synth is not routable internally back to Live.
If you want to stick with a GM soundset, then I would suggest searching the Internet for a VSTi that conforms to GM. To get you started, here's a thread on KVR:

outsidesys you're my hero!
downloaded the VSTi GM synth suggested in the thread
sounds are a bit different, so still did the physical reroute of out to in and record for 1 track which for some reason didn't have feedback
the other 2 tracks worked great with the VSTi
AND IT ONLY TOOK A SOLID WEEK OF OBSESSING AND DIDN'T COST ME A DIME!!!
Thanks for the support everyone, you're all awesome....

you have to record the midi into audio in arrange view, then render to wav from there.

wasn't possible to render to .wav from arrange view, was a GM sound coming from the Realtek soundcard, not a MIDI as in an internal instrument. Thanks though, I've got it sorted now.
