Glad your kid is ok!! You have every right to go ballistic and get in someone's face in that situation, IMO.

Yep, sadly if you wanna make them "understand" you gotta go the "Justice" way... even there they'd probably just be pissed to have to pay for their lack of parenthood.

No No No Think about this situation more old school adult like.

Just wright them a letter stating (as a father) how concerned you are about this. Nicely!

If they are that childish about having a bb gun just lying around than your letter should provide them with the steps and attitude that they need to take to prevent this from happening again.

but first you need time to get over this.

Leave the letter open ended and hopefully later on the both of you could get in touch, maybe have a MAN to man talk. Maybe invite the father on the porch for a drink or so....Be the fucking man.

Hope this helps...cheers,
it could have been a lot worse but a gun is a gun is a gun! CO2 BB GUNS CAN KILL!

20/20 I should not have posted this.

This is music forum. Not a place that should encourage interest in actual people. The sad thing is that I think people actually might be interested. I don't need a blog. I need a life.

 <-- seriously.

bah, people get into it, I'm just on a rant, balancing out the votes so to say. really, tough, you're ON TOPIC enough IMO you've got some OT cred.

it's childhood, another near death/loss of limb experience, those are rough on parents, moreso than the kid. bad parenting is a horrific thing to watch.

I'd guess your only recall is to let everyone know who did it and how poorly they handled it. karma will come around.

me? I'd go shoot his cats with the same gun.

We got invited to a 40th, and somehow some other 8yr old kid got a hold of this gun from inside the house and was running around trying to shoot other kids in a pretend way. He had no idea it was loaded, pulled the trigger while pointing at my boy. Some how it ricocheted off the wall before tagging my boy 1cm below his right eye. What amazed me was there was no apology, no effort to remove the gun from the floor, no effort to deal with the situation. The owners of the house and gun simply glossed over it. AAAARRRRRGGGGGG. I am normally a very chilled individual, but earlier tonight I could have ripped some fuckers heart right from their chest and shoved it..........

/deep breathing\

Edit: He has a nice welt about 2cm dia on his check, no pierced skin.... no puncture wound. Could have been worse.
sorry to hear and welcome to american culture. and what kinda friends you have, you should ask yourself!!!
if you are not into shooting kids, which obviously after your post you are not.

and the owner of the gun is still in a healthy condition? *SIGH*

he would not be with me, that is for sure.
Not really trying to stir anything up, but how is this specifically American culture? Sounds like (no offense gjm) this is a (hopefully) small slice of New Zealand culture. There are stupid people all over the world.

No offense taken. After sleeping on it, it simply boils down to a parenting-role model issue. I have since found out the gun belongs to the other 17 yr old son in that household. Earlier that evening the 20 yr old son loaded it and left it lying on the bed. The response was "... well they should not have been playing in my room..." From a parenting perspective I must remember that line when I am asked why I left the box of matches on the sofa and the lid off the bleach under the kitchen sink. From a role model perspective, I need to let my kids know its ok to point guns, real or not at people. From a cultural perspective, lines have definitely been blurred between the use of a gun as a tool or a toy.

I'm going to take a wild guess that being shot in the face with a BB gun is a bit less disruptive to the face than being shot in the face with a shotgun.
