dunno Neb, I'd rather listen to IDM regardless of what the acronym stands for than 'Aranji Beats.'

oh, this really is a very old topic popping up in every musicrelated forum i have observed so and so often.
i actually don't think there is a need of bashing the term itself and no need of defining it within set limits.
since there is a considerable amount of "idm" tagged music in my collection, i sort of have to admit to myself, i do using being quite comfortable with it as well.
i.e. i got the tags "cliq", "glitch", "exhausting", "emotional electronic" or "indietronica" which are often intersecting with "idm".
is the whole thing not coming down to a "how do you sort your records" discussion and never (anymore) to a discussion of a value in musicevolution, or cultural development?
i am saying "anymore" because what seemed to actually relatively precise to be count in a subculture, has been adapted and keypartelements crossed over all genres.
the far worse problems i have with sorting my technoie music (that one utilizing a 4/4 kickdrum as a ground-element).
i have started to separate it into r-g-b-grey colour-naming of a combi of two colours in certain priority.
works quite well... maybe i should do that to all my music.

there couldn't be a more contradictory term for a genre than Intelligent Dance Music
it should just be called "I Wishiwas Aphex Twin" IWAT
not against glitchy music but 90 percent of IDM is just aphex twin wannabes.

Fueling the fire: If tarnce is so bad, then why does it pack 10s of thousands in stadiums, whereas IDM is for reject clubs in seedy Berlin nerd hangouts?

Heres how I see it
I don't like IDM as a genre title. If somebody reviews a track and calls it intelligent fair enough. IDM implies non-IDM electronica is dumb. Very old discussion. Saw the whole thing played out in dubstep in fast forward micro form.
Heres how I see the timeline
1. New genre with disparate styles and influences -" wow I love this stuff its so varied"
2. As more releases become available some of the big clubs/Dj's champion different strains. Most are between two poles A: Firing, crowd pleasing club tracks B: deep meditative stuff
4. Fans of exclusively type A stuff say type B is boring and up its arse. Fans of exclusively type B stuff say type A stuff is for idiots. Both sides pick weak or obvious releases from the other camp to support their opinion.
5. Of course some people continue to enjoy the good stuff from both sides but they find more and more nights cater for either one or the other to ensure they please whatever target audience they picked.
6. A nicely varied scene is fractured by peoples need to identify with a music styles associations, viewing criticism of the style as an attack on their identity while silmultaniously attacking the other style to reinforce the correctness of their own choice.
Exagerated for the sake of emphasis, forgive

I think it's absurd to call something Intelligent
DANCE Music, and then say
it isnt dancing music
But I'm just speaking "English".

can i start my own genre? please can i? please?
... oh wait... why am i asking? nobody's got any authority on naming genres, as far as i recall. yipee.
"good" as a synonym for "attracting lots of people" is an excellent approach to the whole thing, and exactly where i have seen all other discussions of that type become obsolete.
please let's not lower ourselves to what dissing has done to hiphop.
good riddance.

I can dance to fried eggs.
nom nom nom nom nom nom nom.
I Stumbled Upon this image, I think it's appropriate for these kinds of discussions. there's more good music out there than we're exposed to or rant about.
