i think the best solution to start.stop recording is to some good remote controling (foot pedal controls are amazing for this kind of stuff).

Thank you, I wasn't aware of that option. I am currently setting up my FCB1010 to work with Live and hope I can get it to control the recording on/off.

We shouldn't be left for a workaround, a count in is needed.

How about a simple box in the same area/style as the global groove field?
You set the number of beats of pre-count by typing it in the box for example '4'. Then when you press play it waits 4 beats until it launches or starts, and you can enter '0' once it has begun to make it simple play/stop function again.
I haven't thought this through because its not my job to, but tell me if you see an obvious problem with that method.

Sorry for sounding dumb here, but I still dont' know how to get it to start auto-recording after my hand-made metronome sample in an audio track. I tried but it just keeps replaying the metronome even with the follow action set and "start recording on activate" set.

It was pointed out that this works for MIDI tracks, but i don't see it working for audio tracks.

FWIW, i tried it "au natural" and it's just annoying to have to go back and clip off the start of each and every sample. I have to do that before i can even listen to it so i have to do it for every take. It gets annoying after a while when you're switching continuously between guitar and computer. Trust me

I'd love a count-in feature (it has been noticeably missing for me too, on more than one occasion). I have almost zero issues with Live, and no real complaints... but if I did, this would stand out as about the only one......

A count-in interface could be very simply added, up there in the control strip at the top of the screen... just two items:

[precount on/off button] [number of bars/beats field]

How hard is that? So if it's on, you get a pre-count of xx bars or beats, and then it stops (or not, depending on your metronome setting).... where does that count-in start? Well, it could be tied to the punch-in point, if that's turned on, otherwise, wherever you are at the time, minues the count-in value....

I don't see it as being any problem to add (meaning adding undue complexity, or gumming up the workflow approach), and it's certainly "less good" for me not having it in there....

I just think having to 'add a track with a click file in it' is a "workaround" approach, not a real "workflow" method......

I don't know how adding this feature would diminish the value or useability (or intended use) of Live?? If you don't need it, just ignore it! However, with a count-in function added, Live would be even closer to perfect, IMO...

(By the way, there's a big difference between pre-count and pre-roll... I don' t know that we need pre-roll, but certainly pre-count at a minimum!)

I don't think any workaround will work in a regular studio session.
I do not want to move clips and set any actions commands just to let the program count to 4. This is a maybe the most basic thing in recording .

I like Live and I would like to do the complete creative part of the recording sesson using Live, but this has to be fixed soon.

I think you guys are missing peeddrroo's original point - you DO HAVE A COUNT IN FEATURE - it's just not labeled as such. Count in's are DIRT SIMPLE in Live and Ableton doesn't need to add any feature for this! Just make sure the Quantize Clips is set to a Bar value, then:

-Enable the metronome / hit Play on the menu bar
-Record enable your session clips
-Hit Play for an empty clip scene after the first beat

The count in continues for the duration of the bar without recording, then recording starts on the next downbeat just as you would expect.

I agree this should be better documented, but it works perfectly.

why are the creators of Live obliging its users to get with their way of making music!
They clearly have publications on this site that live can be used in the not so traditional sense by different people for many diferent purposes.
So why cant they open up new doors for us ex DAW users?
Are they trying to make a DJ out of us or something?
I dont see why I should get with their working method, negating the mundanely precount feature used by musicians and not DJ's.
