If the problem never occurred in the studio, that suggests it might be something to do with the environment - heat and vibration don't work very well with computers. Did your Mac give you any indication of what the problem was, any error message? YOu could try NI support, or their forum.
If you keep the Macbook and AK1 then perhaps try to locate it in a well ventilated position, as isolated from vibration as possible. I assume it was not running from battery, because that's never a good idea. Gaffer taping your usb cable might not be a bad idea either.
As for sound checks, I fear them a bit. Very important. Things sound different with a lot of bodies in the way too, so unless you have someone their with ears you trust I guess your best bet is to try and get into the crowd and check for yourself... not very Live though.
