but can i not make use of the apc40 enhancements. monomulator, step seq, changing the colours?
Wrong, you can use max/MSP runtime !
You can use anything done in max, but not edit it.
bingo. this is what im looking for.
i dont need to spend all that cash. I dont really want to edit, just take advantage.

max/msp/jitter won't make any music.
like Ableton Live and other daw
YOU have to make the music
these are just tools.
but indeed, max is expensive, but powerful, but expensive, but powerful etc etc

I've done some max/msp units @ the uni, and it's an amazing tool. You can do anything. But such power require lots of skills and time to know how to use it. While learning how to use it, you could simply make music. It's up to you how to use your time.
I still think that Max/MSP is not for everyone and it's really pushing the technical part of electronic music to the limit. You do need to be interesting in programing and coding to enjoy this kind of tool.
I would love to increase the possibilities of my brand new APC40, but I want something easy, programing a patch in Max/MSP can really break the workflow and hence the inspiration. And I bought the APC to increase my workflow, not to start coding patches (no offense to people who are enjoying this kind of thing, I used to like that too).
I hope that M4L will give to "normal" users the possibilities of Max with a simpler and more direct interface, even if the possibilities are then reduced.

I was just saying that if making music is the purpose, the way no matters
max, live, cubase, fasttracker... no matters.
I'm also a coder, so indeed, I love max because we can use javascript, python and a lot of language with it.
indeed, people must take time to learn it... any tools require at least a little involvement, spending time, etc.
btw, I'm just waiting max for live to easily manage my interface between my
protodeckand ableton live.
I'm using python for now, but a higher level graphical language like max provide better way, easier manner to do that, to make my interface evolves etc...

It makes me laugh sometimes when people say that you can't
make music with Max. They just don't get it...
You can do anything you want with Max, you can literally
implement what ever you can imagine. The problem is you
have to be willing to do some work and be able to learn.
In the end the payoff is worth it.
For me Max is an incredible music development environment:
if allows me to create my own signal processing instruments, custom interface
controls, my own custom externals, allows me to integrate other
sound processing environments (csound, supercollider, rtcmix, VSTs),
supports javascript and python, and does music visualizations as well.
Amazingly, the only thing it does not have is a decent timeline.
But Ableton Max4Live should change that. Yes, Max is expensive, but
it opens a whole other dimension of creative possibility. You just
have to be willing to put some effort in to it.

+1000 (especially: "You just have to be willing to put some effort in to it." nothing comes without effort!)
MAX rocks
