djadonis206 wrote:My opinion is good techno - or loopy music should have a really strong loop
guys who are just amazing at this are Ben Sims and Chris Liebing
I know it sounds kind of obvious but you really need a strong loop and very effective change ups - as easy as some would think it is - it aint...
thanks DKF - I can do something about that ending I think
later
Yeah, loopy techno is fun. But not when the whole line-up sounds the same (like one huge loop). That was my main gripe with shranz. But i'm not bothered by it anymore.
The shranz phase is over around here. Yeah it's still around. But you can avoid it if you want to.
There's a cup of tea in every flavor for those who want it
acid-techno is more my scene

Techno never even took off here - there's a small group of people who do a techno night on Saturdays @ the Re-bar but...it's far from the big room funky techno I like - it's a good night but not my cup of tea
Schranz never even happened here in Seattle or the West Coast
Raves were one thing - you could book Scott Hardkiss next to Frankie Bones and no one knew the difference but no more raves so...
Producing music doesn't mean a scene has to be dead - you just need a fast internet connection and server to host your beats
I was always so blown away when people used to tell me Bryan Zentz lived in Virginia - but he is so global!

SHRANZ is strictly for the dancers, the hardcore ravers and clubbers. It is best understood on a couple of hits of bomb E, a few hits off the spliffy. Not for the weak-minded. It is deceptively simple, leading many toys to believe that it is easy to make and lacking in substance or emotion. Simply not true. HArd Techno never was for the masses; it is a tool that, when used in conjunction with a long night of dancing your ass off, destroys all fear and doubt in the dancer and purifies their heart and mind.
Listen to a KIRTAN if you ever go to India, the Vishnu, Krishna, and Shiva devotees (worshippers) play "shranz". African Tribal music. It is a mantra, and this activity (dancing to hard techno!!!!) is the highest form of yoga and the most joyful activity we can partake in while in this human body. It is the gateway to higher states of consciousness. This is true. It is self-evident in the light that radiates from within the dancer!
I can't get into the minimal shit, as far as dancing goes. Cool to listen to, but not for dancing, really.

Hey that stuff sounds cool - african tribal stuff
I'm interested in some tribal music - african, latin etc - names, labels, artist?
I go to the cd store and the Capitol Hipsters are about as good as the last Death Cab for Cutie single, but not for music as a whole
so - I'm interested

nobody seems to have mentioned the complicated rhythms in techno, it seems to me to be a huge part of it.

It's that loop dawg - it's all in the loop
the stronger the loop the hotter the beat - it's pretty cool how much can go on in a 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 space
sequencing plays a big part I thinks as well - I'm so stuck in the 8 bar change thing it's getting boring - you know something's going to happen but that could just a trained ear thing
sequencing, technical yet funky rhythms - I love it

Heat
I was just studying the 17th porn cut at Platinum on my "un offical Platinum" break
3 solid tracks
but what I was studying was the 8 16 or 32 change up - the short side seemed more schranzzy then the RedHead mix
and again, it comes down to the loop - but the breaks are what's key, interesting change ups that really snap you back to reality
God I just want to go home right now and try my hand at this some more
The first track changed up ever 16 not 8 and the inside track was every 8 (yes I listen to the tracks like homework - but fuck these cats are on pornographic and I'm not)
I love techno - no pun intended

wow, nice take - I grew up with hippy parents so I went to alot of Kirtains as a kid and I tells ya, when it went off it was amazing - when it didnt it was deeply disappointed
Personally that's where Tribal house and techno is the closest - not this kind of loop techno talked about here, but the really drummy stuff with loads of drumming that sounds like it could have Djembe players and loads of percussionists all playing together - like fast tribal house up in the mid 130s to 140
I'm in the process of doing my first Ableton mix which will probably be very tribally which I'll upload soon
Tribal is the mutts nuts and I never tire of those drums
that to me will get ANYONE dancing - put on some banging drummy percussive techno and anyone will find it very hard to not dance

This is "Hard Techno" we're talking about not fucking Zen Buddism

.
Seriously people .......
And if I might add why does decent electronic music have to be so 'rythmn centric' I swear it's like uber beat facism or something.
A great melody with clever use of counterpoint and a great atmosphere can be just as "transendental" as anything else out there.
Seems to me we lost the beauty in the melody a LONG LONG time ago I'm afraid.
(And that's not just a dig at electronic muso's either)

I used to be really big on schranz, like Rush and Robert Natus.
In the last year or so I've found myself wanting to just chill out, and now i rarely listen to/dance to/produce anything over 136 bpm. For some reason harder music just loses its magic to some people over time. I'm only 20, but I feel like my taste has grown up a bit. I'm a Joris Voorn/Vince Watson/Marco Carola/Alexander Kowalski kinda guy these days.

you're missing out on something that you will never understand until you experience it.
I am a classically trained pianist and i understand what you are saying about melody and counterpoint and all that, but there is an ecstasy you can only get from rhythmic music and being a part of a crowd that is moving to it.

I like those cats as well - Marco Carola esp
but you know - making harder, loopy stuff is fun
Focusing on the breaks and minimal but major build
and when I'm out - depending on the situation it has it's place
obviously if I'm at Yo' Son on a Saturday night I'm not asking the dj to play the new CLR or twisting the promoters arm to let me spin - know what I mean
Everything has it's time and place
but seriously fellas - I'm looking for some african / latin tribal stuff
any lables, names etc
I mean if I can cut funk loops into techno just think about what I can do with some serious ethnic rhythms

Nah - gabber is like Hardcore old school jungle (correct)
This is hard(er) techno, more repetitive loopy beats with minimal changes up but changes up none the less - tracky if you will
I'm no expert but I know it when I hear it
Chris Liebing, some Pornographic stuff, Ben Sims etc etc - granted Ben Sims and Mark Broom are more funky and less super hard but Ben Sims and CL teamed up on the last CLR and it's a smoker
I know Christian Varela and Marco Bailey don't quit fit that category but it's hard, loopy and some what minimal (as in changes ups)
Oh, think Hydraulix - D.A.V.E. the Drummer and Roland The Bastard
Remember that label with the funky train on it - I forgot what it was called but those 2 cats were all over that - the sleeves had the same designs but different colors like brown and green and shit - I'd have to go throw my old shit to be more specific
