isn't it just 'no sampling' as in, 'write yer own facking tunes, mate' (ie. stop lifting four bars of classical music and looping it ). That's what I thought, anyways.

not necessarily. horn riffs of various lengths, bass tones, guitar licks, etc., all can be less than a bar in length, hence no looping. People who sample range from the Puffy's (lifting whole songs) to cats I know who take a note or two sounds from a song and freak it into something different than it was before. You can sample somebody and still write your own 'facking' tunes. mate.

Oh I know - I even do it myself at times - no disrespect t'wards creative samplists intended! It's the Puffys I don't like; not the Avalanches(es?) or the DJ Shadows of this world.

I use to sample the shit out records but ended up broke from record shopping and got sick of trying to get clicks out of samples. We did a joint for aceyalone on accepted eclectic and ran into some shit with clearing samples, so we had to rethink our plan. So I got into vst and vsti computer base music programming instead using my asr and 8 track and other analog crap still have fun with them but not often. there is so much shit you can do with sound as long as you can program some beats and have a little music theory under your belt you can accomplish a lot.

When I do sample I will take snit bits or put them into melodyne and reorganize it. Usually when I start a song I will find a drumloop with sounds I like and start dropping sounds and samples over it to get a feeling of what I want to hear. I then hum a bass line in the mic and import it into melodyne and convert it to midi data, and get a good bass sound for it. Then I start to cut up the samples and put effects on them and then bounce it and then do that again. After that I will take the drumloop and reprogram it using my mpd 16 then take the original drumloop and process it with fx four different ways and then bounce it as one track.I will then listen to the track to see what it needs I will make a mock sequence and cut and past shit till I get what I want. then I will take a synth or rhodes and start working around the track and texture it up for drops and climax etc. Then the rest is just adding ear candy. You get a more original sound making your own shit and not depending on others work to make yours. You dont need to sample a four bar break to be true to the art of hip hop thats bullshit! if anything your holding it back from progressing as a art form which I dont care what anybody says it is! despite the wack shit that comes out today because the essence of it since spoony g to jungle bros is can still be reflected in your sound because if you grew up with it its a part of you and will shine in your music.

I hear you dog! I'm all about trying to properly represent and advance the art form AND myself as an artist who truly loves hip hop. I never really looked at it that way--that sampling can possibly be more of a hindrance than a help in terms of advancing the art. Hmmm. I gotta chew on that one a little.
