Unless you're ONLY drumming, then I would get something made for drumming like any 4x4 drum pad.
[Trigger Finger]
[Korg PadKontrol]
[Akai MPD24, MPD32]

But here's my real true opinion. The only drum pad I would KEEP aka not return after having my fun with it haha, is the MPD 32. It has note repeat, knobs, faders, a lot of shit.

IT COSTS $250 at the lowest new.

Launchpad is $200.

Here's my budget minded opinion.

Get a Launchpad, and a LPD8. (You're spending a total of $270) You will have 8 pads and 8 knobs to play with. THE BUILD QUALITY OF THE AKAI LAPTOP STUFF IS GREAT! (You can just fuck around with the Launchpad as the drum rack controller until you find something you wanna lay down, then switch over to the pads to get some velocity sensitivity)
or
Get a Launchpad and the MPD18, spending $30 more to get 16 pads instead of 8. ($300 total) That way you have pads AND your Launchpad.

But, seriously, get the launchpad, with all the stuff it can do, especially the Monome emulator, you seriously can't go wrong. Except the fact that the rubber buttons smell bad haha
I took a look at LPD8 and it looks great. It would complement nicely with my Keystation 61s which lacks pads and knobs.
I already own a BCF2000 so I do not need mixer controls. It seems the LDP8 covers what I need in a small package.
However Launchpad could unleash my creativity because even if I do not plan to perform live, when I explore the various
montage variation of the recorded material to produce a definitive song structure Launchpad could help a lot, being
automatically mapped to Live's grid. Your post was very useful. Now I know I need them both.

@LoopStationZebra

Relax, I'm not trying to diss anybody on here, and I realize that I'm preachin' to the wrong crowd, (obviously  )

Don't jump down my throat at everything I say, FFS!

I was just getting at the fact that I suck at programming drums, and love playing a set.

Some of you crazy mopho's make "fake" drum sound real, so kudos.. shit..

Friends?

Haha, that's a common response to "Launchpad or APC40?"

Machinedrum doesn't have velocity pads either.
It's a no brainer. Get a Launchpad.

I'd like to... yesterday I went to 3 stores in the neighborhoods
and ... They have so many pre-orders that the first non-reserved issue
will be 5th December. The reason why I'd like a Launchpad is having
plug-and-play session view improvisation when I build a song structure.
Maybe I'll get to other functions but LPD8 gives me Drum capabilities now
and adds knobs while later I can have Launchpad to complement my needs.
