yes, twice. once for being a track that you can't hear. and the other time for playing a track when you're not allowed to play one...

There doesn't have to be a set day for it, but a break from hearing any kind of music occasionally, getting some peace and quiet and tranquility (a day with no TV also) is a rare and precious thing, and helps recharge the batteries of musicians and give you fresh appreciation. There's something nourishing to the soul when you get away from the noise and hoi-polloi of daily life, even for a day.

I can tell you that my music got better when I wasn't practising every day solid for 2 hours like I was on a diet. WHen I was more spontaneous, sometimes jamming for several hours and then maybe not doing anything for 2 or 3 days, it feels right, not forced. So I see where Bill Drummond is coming from.

I actually did not pick up an instrument or do any recording for about 2 years back around 2002-2003, and when I did catch the bug again, it was stronger than ever and made me more focused and productive. I think that the fact that music saturation and many crap releases over those years (and most years since the back end of the 90s) turned me off, burned me out and I felt the soullessness in the hype and drivel of a world consumed by Pop/American Idol / X Factor etc, drive thru fast food and cellphone ringtones. I also went through a lot of personal crap which no one would care about and changed some priorities in my life.

However, it felt like bliss to pick up instruments and enjoy it, and start recording again which still took me until 2005 when I basically totally switched over to computer recording from my trusty old 8 track analog and DAT machine, where I was mostly using Cubase for MIDI and only doing scratch ideas in audio, much of which I rerecorded live onto analog tape by replaying the melodies/chords/etc (computers were a lot less powerful back then and processing lots of audio and MIDI tracks together was vastly reduced from what you can do now). The first couple of all digital recordings sounded like shite, but were liberating and I caught the buzz for it, with Cubase SX3 and a Pentium 4 computer. this is true. but there's a difference to have a "forced day" for it.

Forget that. My iPhone is the only thing that stops me from going postal at work...

Obviously he doesn't actually expect people to stop playing music and listening to music (unless he is a complete idiot).

But it gets people thinking. Is wall to wall saturation really such a good thing. Music in supermarkets, elevators, toilets, even in the dentist's surgery. You can't even listen to the news without a musical accompaniment.

Music is important enough to set aside time to listen to it properly.
