Why? They're f*king awesome and need some skill to operate. I may be old fashioned but I for one wish there were more Technics turntables in clubs and less laptops. Say what you will, but vinyl mixing is an art.

totally agreed it is an art, i played 3 deck and efx mayhem for nearly 20 years...
so is proper digital DJ-ing it is also an art, i moved on......

Well that's what happenes if you make a product, add no signifiant improvements, and still want people to pay the same nearly 40 years later. Hope they get cleared ot of the clubs now.

<--- Happy owner of 2 PDX-2000
The reason they have not significantly changed the design is because they do not need to- if it isnt broken dont fix it. The design is (in my opinion) almost perfect. The fact that they have not changed the design and they are still the industry standard club-turntable nearly 40 yrs on speaks for itself.

also agreed, they only changed what was really necessary with the MKII and then later with the MG5, etc. models

If better turntables existed, they wouldnt be the industry standard.

I personally hav'nt used mine for a few years now as I switched to CDJ's, but I am sad to see the line being discontinued and I too would NEVER in a million years sell mine.

I dont expect DJ's who have started DJ'ing in the last couple of years or so to understand that as the likelyhood is that they started out using CDJ's or a laptop, but for me and lots of people I know it was on Technics turntables that we learned our craft and there is still something magical about them.

for me the magic sits in what happens on the dancefloor.... and your head/ears.

Am I old fashioned? Do I sound like a grumpy old fart? Most probably. But hey, that's me! 8)

Peace
still i like em' disappearing... don't worry, want happen in my and your lifetime, thou...

EDIT: honestly i think i am only angry that most DJ booth/clubs are not propper designed to allow a comfortable
digital playing next to turnatbles, CDs...
i just want the space they take for my setup.
All very fair points.

And I also very strongly agree that the magic is what happens on the dancefloor and ultimately that is what it's all about.

When I was saying about it being magical I guess I was getting a little nostalgic and was referring to the excited little buzz that I used to get from using 1210's. It's just when I was growing up the 1210's were the stuff of legend and I always wanted a pair, so when I saved enough, got some, and started playing clubs it was an incredible feeling to be using them.

On reflection though I imagine a DJ just starting out may get the same buzz from using a laptop or CDJ's.

I am still sorry to see them go.

EDIT

a little birdy just told me that they will continue making the mk6 1210's and the "entry level" mk5's.....not familiar with them myself but it would appear that the turntable lives on!! Hooray!! :D

And yeah, clubs should be ready to accomodate a digital set up by now!

I think I'll buy a set as soon as I get some cash. I can't believe they are discontinuing them, but like I said in another thread, "time stands still for no one!".

Turntablism will not be the same without 1200's and 1210's.

this is an oburtunity to have the ultimate vinyl vs digital argument to end all arguments.

It will be every time dj's who prefer to perform with vinyl. not everyone will follow this digital mode trend. this guys would be make the significant difference in further time from the rest who follow this hype. my opinion playing with vinyl is a lifestyle and philosophie . and it gives more individually recognition value from your sound and your person.

VINYL WOULD NEVER DIE

LOOK, this is a really impressive creative performance. VINYL ONLY (timeless)

yes!

still i also like the possibilities you have to manipulate your sets. it can simply enhance the 'experience' of good music being played.

Whatever technology you're using to play music today that isn't vinyl won't last 35 years. That's the main reason why it's a sad story.

We can always get one of these!

The source for all of this is just some random forum post. Even that inthemix.com.au or whatever news post is just citing the random forum post.

So... Why do we believe this at all?

so some other chap just told me as well.

also: http://www.panasonic-europe.com/technics/

perhaps someone at pannasonic has had a brainwave marketing ploy to drum up some sales for xmas!

top of every music heads xmas list is officially now a pair of new 1210's!

you know panasonics have pulled this stunt before a few years back but they never pulled the plug..

but yeah, my first pair lasted 19 years and sold it to get a new pair.. I will never sell my technics or my vestax tables.. it doesn't mean i am not going to embrace the newer advances in djing because i already have.. serato, ableton, midi controllers, etc.. but nothing yet really has come close to the feel of a true turntable. mixing wise, it can be substituted with controllers and such, especially cdj's... but in regards to scratching and turntabllism, there is no substitute. for those that argue that you can scratch and juggle on other controllers and cdj's, it's true you can but it's also true that your skill is limited. hence you don't see the limitations of the substitutes..

i like the discussion, ok here's another angle I've been thinking about, here's one of my fav digital djs
whom you've no doubt heard ean golden

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTgkWtND-IE

now the thing that occurred to me is that his style and the style of those like him to me looks like more than anything else he's emulating an mpc style of playing with a digital dj setup, my question for alot of you into this sort of thing is why do you call this so foward thinking, and he's a dj no doubt but for all the millions of those doing this with an mpc forever they're not seen as djs, the only difference I can see is that the pads he's using 'videogame triggerpads' just don't feel as good as mpc pads, other than that how is it that the architecture here that's very old has become futuristic via a vci controller and tracktor?
