Control over the music should probably be dependant on the action, not the location of the characters. If I work this effeciently, I could probably get away with less than 4 or 6 channels.

Dude, you have must have an INT of 18! Genious. I bet you could set up one track with basic soundscapes or music; Another for Battles, bartering and rogue-ish acivitied to add to the soundscapes; Another track for Enemy/Ambient SFX, and another for PC SFX... run it all through one or two send channels to effect reverb, filters and such.
Damn. That sounds fun. Two hobbies at once.
OOOOH! and Bard song and Spell evocation SFX - stuff the vidoe games DON'T do!!!
I think you rolled a "20" with thius idea! I might have to try it myself... If I can get my group to agree on a date.

BTW, I have a BUNCH of Kung Fu body shots, cracks, punches and the like. Would be GREAT for a monk PC. Holler and I can send you a Zip of the good bits...

In fact, now that I think of it, it's not such an original idea after all... I seem to remember that one person on the boards was using Ableton Live as it was particularly useful for improvisational theatre. While film scoring can be done in a rigid time scale (the film progresses along a predetermined path) I think he/she was using something similar to my planned methodology for improv. You probably just have to have your scenes and clips ready to rock for various moods or themes that the actors will likely hit.
Maybe an idea for Ableton's marketing dept to check out! RPG types and improv actors!

Come to think of it, though. I MIGHT have been brain washed. It's a BIT foggy, but I can remember wearing a dress, and an earthy woman wearing pa-chew-lee oil and a sun dress wagging a bone over me and inducting me into the cult of Dice Demons! No wonder I thought that Marlon Wayans was such a good choice for the DnD movie.

session view as dice roller:
1) set up n+1 audio clips, n being the amount of sides on a die.
2) each audio clip would say a number, 1 through n, and clip n+1 would say "rolling n sided die".
3) put the n+1 audio clips in an audio track in Session View.
4) set the follow action for clip n+1 to random, and trigger it.
