Greetings people

???? ??? ??? ????? ???? dergar :)

The issue dergar is describing is probably related to rapid speedstep switching caused by the isochronous services that are used for Firewire audio.

I'm all over this too, because it does get my macbook pro hot, and its really hot here in Greece so hot + hot = too hot :p

Gearslutz thread (most discussed): http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-co ... proof.html

Apple Discussions thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... &stqc=true

It's frustrating these problems exist on -they say so- professional machines with professional interfaces since it most probably seems to be a software issue related to Apple's kernel extensions

We can just bug the hell out of them till they give our issues a priority and fix them

Yes, I thought so since the beginning.

Add the Ableton Suite 8 CPU Usage that gives me a hard time lately with some tracks (e.g., just one Grand Piano track in a set uses 50% of my CPU after 8.1.4 but thats another issue that I deal with Ableton support these days) and the temperatures are a certain reference to the bl**** hel*! I see 90 Celsius some times...

Many thanks for these Gearslutz and Apple threads!

Exactly, professional frustration :) The first thing I begged them at Apple was to tell to their developers to solve this issue via software update! The support here in Greece answered me that it was a hardware issue and that in newer machines it was solved (not true as a musician friend of mine in NY had the same issue much later)...

Yes, lets keep telling the exact truth until the issues are solved... Not for the money we have paid (I don't care about their freaking money) but for the quality! This is the key point I think, if people that make beautiful creations (art, great technological products etc.), get some freedom from the profit strictly oriented procedures... Besides, professional machines are not for the masses, just to raise up the selling rates! They have to be as good as they can be...

Hi Dergar

I know that this is an old topic, but I am having the exact same problem with a little (but annoying) whine from my keyboard when I plug my Apogee Duet in to my MacBook Pro 13" by firewire. The Apogee is brand new and the MBP is one year old. I just wanted to ask if you found any solution to the problem, or what you ended up doing?

I called Apple hotline, who told me that my hardware warranty just expired, so they can't really help me check the computer for any CPU problems or other hardware issues. So if no miracle solutions turn up, I need to choose between living with the whine or getting another interface (which is quite sad if the problem is in my MBP - I like the Apogee funcionallyties).

Kind regards
MortenT

Hi Morten and many thanks for writing to the topic!

Yes, the problem seems to appear in all the MBPs that are one years old now (mine is about 15 months old). A friend of mine, she lives in New York and bought it from an Apple store there about 8 months ago has the same little issue but she says it is very small...

I have chosen to live with the issue, it is not so bad after all (the whine is hardly audible only in total environmental silence) and you get used to it (I have forgotten of it :)! The Duet is a fantastic interface! I am also djing using the aggregate option via Live 8.2 and it is pure joy! The sound of the Duet is superb and the pre-amps are some of the best I believe! I connect my bass and telecaster guitars and I am very happy with all the set up!

Best wishes!

Hi Dergar

Thanks for your answer. I think I'll live with it to. Its only a small problem when there is totally silence in the room, and then I can always unplug it. Sorry for reminding you about the whine if you forgot about it :)
Never heard of Live 8.2, but I will check it out.

Yes, I also unplug the Duet when I don't need to use it! The firewire connection heats up the system as well... No problem, I have not forgotten, I just got used to it and I am happy with the set up. 8.2 is the best version since the first 8.1.x ones... it worths updating! Live is an amazing program!

Cheers!
Chris
