One thing about Los Angeles, what does he use to get that vinyl type crackle going throuhg his tracks? Is it from vinyl samples and if not how does he get it going.

I hear the same kind of thing in the Jon Hopkins album 'insides', that kind of vinyl noise and stuff...is it just added in like with Live's vinyl distortion? How do they get it to sit in the mix without washing out everything else?

good call on the SP303 - Roland has got "fake vinyl crackle" figured out as an effect, for sure. That, and some of the compression effects, even on their cheap gear, are actually really good right out of the box. You can just use the SP303 as an effects box, period, bypassing the sampler in its entirety, which is also pretty awesome - anyone wanting cheap, dirty effects, SP303 is it.

izotope's free vinyl plugin does that perfectly well.

Flying Lotus primarily uses Ableton, although he also uses Reason (or at least used it in the past). You wanna know what's part of his sound on Los Angeles? Ableton's side-chain compression. He's got a core set of sound samples that he uses and re-uses.

Other than that it's TALENT. There's nothing magical or expensive about how he gets his sound, apart from that magical space between his ears.

I like his studio... very humble...

Try using Live like an MPC 2000. The Mpc can divide a loop into 8/16/32 samples across the pads and play the original sequence of the loops back from midi (just like slice to midi). Now if you add heavy amounts of goove or change the master tempo, as long as the slices are big enough (1/8 plus) the swing to the audio your hear will start to sound 'wrong'. It takes skill to make it then sound wrong but wrong in a way you like.
