Also worth considering if you have a collection of hardware: does the unit (and the rest of your studio) have wordclock?
If you need to connect several convertors, processors or sync cards, wordclock is the most reliable option.
I was in the market as well, and ended up buying the M-audio 2626. It will be here early next week. A month ago, not a single hair on my head would have thought about M-audio, but this particular unit gets rave reviews, and I was recommended the 2626 by collegues who would typically work with hi-end gear, like avalon and such. Very good sound and very reliable. I hope they are right.
The presonus firestudio line is said to suffer from easily fried chips.
Focusrite should be fine.
why not an apogee duet? (maybe too limited in i/o)

i use the m-audio fasttrack pro and i have no problems, relly nice interface for a good price 
if you have the money - check the RME Fireface 400 but its not cheap
