Gotta say, in moving to Windows 7, my Focusrite Saffire has gone from being glitchy as hell to being totally stable! Hasn't locked up on me once.

The trick appears to be to use the 'Legacy' firewire drivers rather than those provided for your chipset (read it on a forum somewhere - will see if I can find it again). This is on a Dell Studio laptop by the way with a non-Texas Instruments firewire chipset.

That said, I also have an Echo djx which rocks!

Hey, ScarKord. Really diggin your songs on you website . So which Saffire do you own? I've been looking at the Saffire PRO 24 which seems like a viable option.

Another option may be to buy a firewire express card. Anyone know of any good brands?

Most probably it wont fix the problem since the express slot is also Ricoh on Lenovos. Try few cards - Echo,Focusrite,Presonus etc and take the one that works the best with your notebook

Thanks, but I also have to keep in mind that I will be going to buy a Mac within the next 3 years.

Although the MOTU Ultralite doesn't have the best drivers for Windows, does it still have the ability to go rather low latency?

So looking at my list of options I have:

Audio DJ 8
MOTU Ultralite
Echo Audiofire 8
Saffire Pro 24

Again, I need low latency for live performance. Firewire on my laptop stinks and I'm going to be buying a Mac in the next few years.

Stupid question about the Ultralite:

Can you insert line signal to the mic pre inputs?

I'm thinking of getting the Ultralite so i could have all the 6 outs from my virus to separate channels, but that fills out all the line ins and it would be nice to have couple of extra ins just in case.

Then again i could allso get this one: http://www.thomann.de/fi/edirol_m10mx.htm and stick it in to the S/PDIF of the ultralite. Do somebody have any experience on that little mixer?

the inputs 1-2 are mic/line inputs, so yes.

It's only a Saffire LE I have, but it does have decent mic pre's as well as additional ins/outs I need to use external effects units. (4 ins and 6 outs if I remember correctly). The onboard Firewire on my Dell Studio is Ricoh I believe and certainly was creaky on Vista but seems very stable under Windows 7.

As rikhyray says, it's almost a case of trying a few soundcards until you find one you like. Not entirely practical I grant you, but I've tended to go down the ebay route myself, as you can sell them on again for pretty much the same you paid.

I just need an audio interface for DJing live gigs. I have an Apogee Duet, but the single stereo output ties into the headphone out so I can't cue. The Presonus Firebox looks simple enough with enough outs and is priced well. The MOTU Ultralite is overkill for what I really need. A firewire AI with a separate out for headphone cueing.

I was going to keep the Duet for studio use and Firebox for gigs.

If that's really all you need, and you have an express card slot, you can't go wrong with the Echo DJx. Has two independent outs so you can have a separate headphone cue. Works a treat for that!
