P.S.
my MOTU is the 828 prior to the mkII
and it's connected directly to the G4
and my FW drives are routed thru a powered 2 port hub
OUCH! Is this an audio-engine deal? Live4 vs. Cubase`

The RAID concept is based on the fact that you would have two DRIVE MECHANISIMS sharing the load, so partitioning will not creat a RAID array. I find it rather odd that you are getting a disk overload indicator, as your HDD is obviously not the problem.
Three more things I need you to clarify for me:
1) What model number Lacie 80Gb 7200rpm Firewire HDD do you have? I have a Lacie 80Gb 7200rpm Firewire HDD, and I do not run into this problem.
2) Was your powermac ever given a processor upgrade? If so, what did it start out as?
3) Do you use any disk optimisation software like DiskWarrior, TechTool, or Drive Ten?
Sorry for the huge number of questions, but this is pretty much how the long-distance troubleshooting goes...
BTW...
Just so you know, I run a 1gHz PowerBook with only 512Mb ram, Lacie 80Gb, and 828MkII... And I simultaneously participate in AND record sessions as long as you have described on a fairly regular basis... only obvious difference between us so far is the two 828's... but we will get to that after these questions variables have been eliminated...

Have you tried plugging your lacie in directly (bypassing the hub) just to see what happens...?
14 tracks shouldn't be putting a strain on things at all.... I can easily stream 14 tracks from my little 2.5" 7200 rpm external drive....
As well, the previous question about defragging (optmizing) your audio drive is an important one. If it's badly fragmented, you can get serious performance hits there.
I'm also suspecting the FW hub you have in the chain..
So, my two suggestions: Check the fragmentation on the lacie, and try plugging it in direct (sans hub)...
