And yeah, I'm not terribly proud of the last thing I posted in the Link Your Music section, but damn it, I finished a stupid track and shared it with the world. Now I'm on to the next one, and I feel free and empowered to learn as much about the tools I use as I want.

and yes i love technology a lot and i love to talk and discuss it for hours and hours yet the contradiction of life itself more then often makes me laugh at people doing it as well, but not getting anything done. which just happens to be so many... well maybe it is a berlin specific thing that starts to make you smile... when it comes to that, hence robert teaching here at UDK and feeling the need to 'get this across' alone says everything, doesn't it?

i am in university study a music media and performance course, we have been thought lots from logic to PT, recording bands, finalcut and video filming and editing, website design, maxmsp, performance modules, its a great course, we cover the very technical aspect to the sound art nonsense..

i remember in a module last year we were discuessing with our lecturer how many of the 40 of us are actually making music on a daily basis, about 5 of us put are hands up.. our lecturer almost gave out to us. he was shocked at the amount of little music we were making and how much time we spent on sample rate, nyquist freq and jitter discuessions, he ended up cancelling a midterm as long as we created music

But, on a sidenote, is Robert still banging that favourite drum of his ? That whole ""synths were so big, expensive and unstable in the past"" routine ? It's a pretty grotesque outlook for a key figure in Ableton, or any commercial software developer, to keep peddling. It's almost as if he doesn't see himself or ableton held to modern consumer standards because we should be sooooooooo grateful we're not using old, cumbersome and expensive hardware from yester-year.

It's a bullshit fallacy he seems intent on pushing into the public psyche.

I have a lot of complex tree structures of fragments on my hard-disk, and this a great source of material and inspiration.

I really want to get in the habit of using Bert's saving method. I believe he saves his projects with a different name every time he works on them, so it would be something like trackname_date_time.

Anyone got tips on that?

It's pretty easy. Just put "songname 01", then "songname 02". That's what I do. If you want date, then just sort the files by date last created/modified, or add it in the name. It's saved my ass countless times when I wanted to go back, or a project got corrpupted or something.

I interpret the Robert Henke quote (in the 1st post) as an observation of what's going on big picture, when he sees people getting hung up on "gotta have this or that plugin" instead of just rocking out and seeing what comes of it. At the same time, gear can inspire new sounds, directions and learning for me. Also, Elliott Smith was a huge gearhead and Autechre write Max patches. Sounds like keeping that tricky balance is something even he tries to stay conscious of. Good advice and interesting thoughts as usual.

i had a folder with my name in the library. and anything from a clip, an effect setup, to a nearlywhole track gets just dragdropped in there instead of close'n'delete live.

that way, i have a chaotic list of all sorts of fun things. when ever i don't know what to do, i grab one or two randomly, and play with them to find new inspiration.

This part is especially revealing:
