Follow up - Abandoning APC 40 & Ableton 8 for Maschine
Re: Follow up - Abandoning APC 40 & Ableton 8 for Maschine
Yo recon, how do you like this LP video: click
How would you rate it?
Don't you like this kind of performance or do you fear the work you would have to put into it to make it work?

Trick question? "How would you rate it?"#1thelark wrote:Yo recon, how do you like this LP video: click

Frankly this guy knows how to use the lauchpad apparently and more so has taken the time to put together the clips, etc. But again that's just it. For him to do what he is doing on the fly is virtually impossible. Futhermore, he really is not doing anything if I may say. Let me ask you a question. What is he doing? And is that considered a performance. There is no knob tweaking, no change of tempo, nothing. Not a drop of anything but pushing buttons with no real result.
I actually thank you for sending this video because it futhermore illustrates how silly and wasteful spending money on the launchpad would have been for me. If a single person on here considers that djing then it's safe to say we are not on the same page.
With Maschine I can throw it in my bag and jam out live, on the fly with my rocker friends, my production friends, my hip hop friends, you name it..That's what I love about it. It has that type of versatility where the APC 40 and just about most other thing out there does not. And yes to do what this kid does, I do fear the amount of work required to do what he is doing and at the end of the day, I know 100% I'd still feel something is lacking.
I am starting to sound like a spokesperson for NI
Re: Follow up - Abandoning APC 40 & Ableton 8 for Maschine
I did not post this to convince you how cool the Launchpad is. In fact I am in the process of considering whether I keep the LP and/or APC as an additional controller for Live and my Maschine.
I do love the workflow of Maschine as well but I haven't found a good way to combine Maschine and Live so far. I only used Maschine in standalone mode, but I will get back to it as the new 1.5 beta seems to be available by now. And still I feel to have a controller for Live's session view.
I was really impressed by that video above...so was I about the Maschine video that you posted earlier. I think it's just a matter of taste. I guess I will never be that quick with my fingers, but I will be happy to learn from you once you posted your results with the Maschine.
On the other hand I think that guy in the LP video has some extensive sound knowledge as well... and I like that live remixing of different tracks.
BTW: If you watch both videos without sound it's basically two videos showing the same... some guy is pushing buttons

Maschine running fragmented's Live template (which covers mixer, instant mapping of macros, transport and drum rack) plus Launchpad for session view clip triggering is an excellent combo.
Re: Follow up - Abandoning APC 40 & Ableton 8 for Maschine
I just use Launchpad to quickly trigger clips with drum patterns and record the results into arrangement for further processing. Especially since it's faster than midi mapping to keys or pads, it's an ideal solution to create crazy edits without moving the mouse or spend time mapping clips to midi. The launchpad's simplicity lends itself to faster workflow, it's an obvious and uninterrupted solution for sequencing drums in dnb and hip-hop. Then again, I'm not planning on using it for djing, just production, but that's why I think the APC40 is a bit better for the live aspect. The most difficult aspect of the entire problem you posted is that it's selling more Maschine as a standalone solution or with Traktor than with Ableton.

finally having time to watch that video..recon1 wrote:I found this on youtube. This is an example of what I am talking about with Maschine. It's not me, but this is exactly how I envision using Maschine. There are others on youtube that are mindblowing. Then go look at APC 40 videos. They basically all suck.![]()

looks exactly like a tiny launchpad/apc40 to me. put each sample onto a clip in live, change the quantisation, and play. exactly the same..
not that it's not great what he does (i just don't like the wrong-speed daftpunk sample, else it's really cool).

i mean, no offense, but if you think the APC itself was causing audio cracking then you probably don't know much about the hardware in the first place

i think we've just hit a little evolutionary hump in computer music, we have all the features under the sun but now things are turning full circle and going back to the 'instrument', Ni is riding a wav right now that they started themselves, not unlike ableton did when it came out. In computer music things are heading this way

I don't happen to like the music in the clips but the point is so obvious that that doesn't matter, developers have worked on integration
between hardware and software for a while now, there's a zillion midi controllers, but now the challenge is not to make another midi controller, or another automap software for that matter, now the challenge is to make a midi controlling instrument that excels at production and performance, and in this day and age live performance.
this is where maschine mops the rest of the controllers
I think ableton will rise to the challenge because if they don't the same thing will happen to them that happened to all those apps that they left in the dust. ...... to the op, the last thing i would do is stop using live, Live is the Ideal program for this kind of evolutionary integration, one of the first thoughts of anyone who sees maschine in action is 'damn! i wish i could do this with live, when I found out what maschine was really all about all i coul think was ableton should have got in bed with ni instead of akai, I understand that they did it because ableton obviously has the brains and they probably figured that akai has the brawn which they do
but not when it comes to computer music, that's why one of the most requested things on the maschine forums is a good template for ableton because the combination is sick sick sick.
