It takes me about 2 days to install all the software I use, authorise it, load up projects and realise there is still one little plug i haven't put on.

Quite honestly I couldn't be fucked doing that. What would the point be anyway? Brilliant, Live works well on an os I don't use.

That's like taking your car into the garage and saying it doesn't work and the mechanic suggesting that you use a boat instead.

well, it wouldn't be that much work for me: find one with a mac and live, send over my projects, open them and test.

and the point? choice of os is largely unimportant by today, both perfectly stable within their environment. and it looks like live has much more issues on recent osx versions, than on windows.

installing win7 would take me 8 minutes. live around 15. no clue how long "all the others" would be, as i don't use anything else. but it would easily be done on a boring afternoon.

i find it funny how many people reply with "what would be the point". tailoring down the reasons for the crash is always good. i can't understand any person who can't understand that. it's so simple logic. i would prefer to play on an os that i might not have chosen first, but having it stable, then, than having it crashing all the time. wouldn't you?

Also, you should know by now that this arguemnt is nothing but a waste of everyone's time.

yeah it looks like people don't actually want to get their stuff working, and just cry? at least some. others would gladly test for a moment on a different system to see if they can at least be stage ready with it.

since when? hm.. the moment people startet moving to snow leopard, there where lots of discussions showing that live doesn't work that well on it, and they had to revert to older osx versions. there where discussions about some macbooks being much more prone to crashes, too (3phase discussed this. he possibly is one with such a macbook generation).

besides live i see quite some other applications having more and more stability issues on the newest mac systems.

so i say it would be worth a quick try.

I've been emailing the developers of all my audio software, tools & plugins, in the run up to upgrading my OSX.... and your statement is at odds with the replies I have received from every single one of them. Well, I didn't email ableton yet.

well, at least developers got informed that they have to actually recheck their applications for snow leopard. it dropped half of the os (everything 32bit), and any application still using somehwere some 32bit version of something would instantly crash. lots of applications (firefox f.e.) had to get updated to work well on the new os.

and as we know live is buggy and they have a hard time finding the bugs, changes in the os could thus lead to more issues that should be fixed, but get lost in the mess of all other issues.

you can find quite some lists of "what software doesn't work after upgrading to snow leopard". most of those softwares, by now, are updated and work just fine. but i fear live didn't really helped to have to adapt to that, too. with all the other issues.


live 7 needed to get updated just for snow leopard, f.e. live 8 got those updates, too. but they might not helped, but made it worse, instead.

Although I dont agree with the assertion that someone should try a different os (lol wtf) I do have to admit that...

A) Every person I know personally that is having crippling problems with 8.x.x is running a mac

B) No one I know using Ableton 8 on a PC is having near as many issues (maybe minor ones but nothing serious)

C) Ever since mac went intel it seems like they have been having more issues with stability in certian applications

Disclamer: I dont care about the OS war personally, thats an arguement for fanboys. Use what works for you.

the weird thing still is, that it started to be real bad with 8, before you had your normal little bug issues and the like.

how is that coming down to OS ??? i wonder!

6 was a dream under osx.

+1, and this is why i suggest to just find someone near having the other os, to quickly test it out. i just forgot that a lot of people are very vst-heavy in their setups, which makes portability very complicated.

for me, it would be just sending the project over to someone with a macbook and test it there. very quick, no pain, and an easy check to validate if i maybe went the wrong vendor way in terms of os. if i would have lots of problems, i would have tried that. and if it would have helped, i would by now be a proud owner of a macbook. they are nice, so why not?

it still is abletons fault of course. but the os could trigger the issues more or less (esp. if it's multithreaded buginess, the simple fact that all the os and os versions have different thread schedulers can result in completely different behaviour).

i know snow leopard changes the thread scheduling algorithm. it could trigger more bugs.

oh, and, does live 6 work on snow leopard? at least live 7 didn't anymore, they had to update it.

ahh, okey fair enough... SL is obviously something that introduced major changes... true i had one single issue with logic8 as well until it disappeared with 10.6.2...

they removed half of the os, and internally changed quite a lot of the remaining os. quite massive changes for the tiny update it looks to be indeed.

live has been much more stable since i upgraded to SL

i only can crash live now doing very specific, very documented things

but in my normal work flow, no crashes
