It can be difficult to lift your head above the parapet, I hadn't had a proper weekend off for months and I was going mental (I also live miles from most of my mates, so it can be difficult to let off steam at the best of times). When you spend all your time being your 'work self' it's bloody exhausting.

I was at bursting point but this weekend I went to a mates got wrecked, made some tunes and just turned myself off. Put things into perspective big time.

Time to start having fun again!

throw two kids and a wife who wants to consume into mix.....20 days seems like a nice 3 day weekend.
Life, loss, creativity, and inspiration....it is all cyclical, I have gained some of my most inspirational creativity sessions from the forced breaks and the resulting frustration....
Nothing wrong in complaining about it, at least your vocal and not repressing it.

Pasha, I'm still looking for work after several months unemployed.

After being laid off after 8 and a half years in the same job, I understand about working long hours with numpties and Little Hitlers, but I would take that back in a heartbeat right now, watch the bills pile up and watch the harassing credit phone calls increase and you may feel a little differently.

It's definitely got me depressed and frustrated, to the point where I am now becoming a prick on these forums with all my frustration, boredom and pain (from medical issues I can't afford to have resolved now I don't have a benefit plan).

This week the huge corporate parent company of the company I work for made it crystal clear they no longer want us in their portfolio, although they've been hinting at it for quite some time. But this week they closed a bunch of offices throughout the country, eliminated some management layers, and laid off others with certain job titles across the board only so they can reapply for the job they already have but compete with the people who's position is eliminated.

All this is done to make our company look more lean and attractive to a potential buyer and they really don't care if it's a buyer who buys the company as a whole or an individual office and liquidates it. So for those of us who remain and follow the corporate plan will most likely be rewarded with a pink slip for a job well done.

Meanwhile their share holders will be thrilled they got rid of us because we are profitable but not making huge sums of money hand over fist.

So I'm not unemployed yet but by doing my job well that will be the probable end result. Try wrapping your head around that one for 40 a week. And fuck no I'm not spending overtime working myself out of a job.

I worked for a major long distance company a few years back. They were bought out. I got 14 weeks severance pay. It sucked getting laid off, especially after watching over 800 others get laid off around me during the course of about a year, but when it was said and done... the severance was really nice. I was eligible for unemployment, which I had paid in to for several years, but never used... Thats what allowed me to move to California and change my life up. Its worked out well. Not that it was bad before, but I've upgraded. Sometimes being forced to change is the only way you ever will. I'm not saying that its easy and I'm not wishing it on you, but sometimes things like that have a way of coming back as really good pivot points in life.

Before the job I have now I worked at Cisco Systems for about 6 years (gee, kind of wish I still did after this week's announcement) but got laid off during the great dot com bubble burst and downsizing. They gave everybody 6 months pay as a severance. The company I work for now thinks an "attractive" severance package is 1 week's pay for every year you've been with the company. Um, no.

But like I said, the company I work for now has their fingers in a lot of cookie jars...a lot of fingers they are working on cutting off, but that does give me internal access to job openings in different divisions they have and I should get cracking on exploring those. If nothing else maybe I can find one with less than the 35 mile commute I have now.

I've had some eh jobs for some well known companies but the thing I've really liked is the people I work with so yeah, it really does suck watching people get let go that are essentially your second family for 40 a week. As I look back they've been in the process of downsizing for the 3 and 1/2 years I've been there, but now it's accelerating and obvious it's not going to end until nobody is left standing.

Maybe I could go back to Cisco. Another obvious frothing desire would be Apple. To a lesser extent there's also Ebay and Google. There's no shortage of forward thinking successful companies in my backyard. I just don't know what I could bring to their tables because I'm more of a general management person than having specific skills that would make me attractive. Also all my past jobs with well known companies started out as a temp so I have no problem whatsoever going that route. I just wish I didn't live in a time in history where it's common to start a completely new job with a different company every 4-5 years. That just blows but that's how things are now.
