How Important is a Midi Controller when starting out?
Re: How Important is a Midi Controller when starting out?
mpk25 or axiom25 will be enough to get you going. since you don't play keys i don't see you needing more than 25 anyway. plus, it's nice to have them because you can assign them to do different things in ableton like launching clips, turning off/on sound effects, whatever really. even if you grow into something else later i'm sure you will still find a use for the mpk25 or axiom25.

And you don't necessarily have to know how to play keys yet, just having a hardware that you can psychically touch makes it a lot better and easier to play around with music in live rather then the keys on the keyboard of the mac. Mpk25 is a good board, keys feels pretty good, good amount of knobs, you may not need the pads but one day they come in handy when you progress in making music with live and your like "oooo what i can map to those pads and use while im recording my track". Get something that you want and then some on that bitch, im sure you'll be happy in the long run down the road. Once playing around like this in the beginning, in due time you'll get a better idea of what else you need if this is truely a career or hobby your willing to spend money on. Gets fun tho enjoy what ever choice you make for your first controller. I vote the mpk25 for now, use it and love it.

From what I've seen, this will be great to get started... and what's even better is that if you decide you want more keys, the MPK25 will still have good value for you because of it's compact size, so it's definitely a great purchase.
