But overall I disagree with this statment if you are an artist, you shoult try to bend the rules.

I love multi-band compression on a full drum kit or drum loop. Gives a nice glue without the bass squashing out the highs. But I don't think I'd use it on anything else. Although it can be a cool effect on a synth or something. Pretty much always as an effect though, like distortion or a phaser, in which case it's a fun experimental tool.

I've used Multiband occasionally on synths to tame a particular area of the spectrum. Like if a synth lead has a few boomy parts, or parts where a resonant filter sweep peaks out....I'll set the MC for just that little part. It takes a bit of care to not alter the sound too much, but it works quite well....better than EQ or compression when done well.
