How are the two chords spelled D-F#-Ab-C and G#-B#-D-F# related? Bonus points if you can spell them in their most common voicings found in the classical repertory.

Never took a class. Never read a book. Surrounded by very talented session musicians who taught me how to listen for the harmony and the hook. (I just made a rhyme! )

I'm still trying to forget all the theory I learned! What I failed to take into account is that the majority of the music I love was written by people with very little theoretical knowledge, but massive knowledge on how to translate a passionate feeling into music. It can be very very hard to remember that the map is not the territory!

I don't know where I'd be without music theory. I wish I knew more of it. I don't understand people who say it gets in the way. It's just a vocabulary for describing what you're doing -- like getting a map and a compass before you run off into the jungle.

It might have been better if I had gone to a less conservative music school. All I learned was straight up classical theory, which is very often the exact opposite of rock, jazz, and other things I'm much more interested in. I can't really say it was all that bad though, considering I knew next to nothing going in and now I'm fascinated by, and utilize, much much more complex ideas than I ever knew were possible.

Discount all my statements re: music theory. I am too bitter to be objective.

Honestly... you've got me beat by a long shot. I chose option 1 up there because the knowledge I had that might put me in the option 2 category is so dusty and moldy that I'd make a mockery. Somebody told me once that my verses need to be 16 bars... fucked me up for like 2 years. Finally, I stopped worrying about it again and the funny thing is, writing got back to being easy. I stopped worrying about the lines and boxes and started letting the music tell me when. Much simpler in real life vs. the other method... that worked great on paper.

Having studied classical and jazz harmony in my undergraduate work I feel like I'm in better shape than those who have only studied one or the other. Jazz harmony nomenclature has the ability to easily communicate things that make classical music theorists' heads explode trying to explain, while classical theoretical studies often involve elements of such complexity that are not to be found in jazz and popular styles.

na, absolutely nothing worng with music education and knowledge, just make funky music with it and all is good
