XP is still the best OS for audio and many other things. It's mature, rock solid, and has the lowest latencies of any OS out there. The 4gb RAM limit is important only to people who use absurd amounts of samples. For most of us, this is not a practical limitation.

The hardware article (4K drives) is a concern, but only when your current system/drives actually fail. That's my approach now - I love Win7, but I see no need to go there just yet. My current quadcore machine has at least another year or two of life left before I top out with FX and what not. Till then, it'll run XP. My next machine will be at least a 6core or 8core with at least 8-12gb of RAM. At that point, I'll to Win7, and by then, most of the drivers will be updated, and Live will be fully compliant. Until then, I see no reason to go there.

I will say that I added Ubuntu via Wubi on my laptop, and now I have a great modern "experience" for all non-musical needs. My DAW, however, is firmly on XP, tuned, tweaked, and kicking ass. Not worried about upgrading at all.

Before anyone replies with some dual boot pain in the ass suggestion, please take this into account: I'm not unhappy with my operating systems (Win 7 and XP) I just like the idea of saying fuck you to both Microsoft and (especially) Apple in the one smooth operating swoop that is Ubuntu.

The only thing better than an awesome product, is an awesome free product.

Wubi = no need to dual boot AT ALL. Install like you would any app. Dont' like it? just Uninstall it.

hmmmm. this Wubi you speak of sounds interesting... it also sounds like a security blanket that my ex girlfriend had since she was kid...

http://wubi-installer.org/ - you download the Ubuntu ISO and have it in the same directory as the Wubi installer. Run Wubi and install Ubuntu. The only modification it makes is to your boot.ini file with an added option to load up to Ubuntu. You can always boot to Windows, unintall Wubi, which removes the entire Ubuntu install, and your boot.ini file goes back to normal. This is about as easy and as harmless as Linux could ever get for windows people to try it. No dual boot, no risk, no problems. AT ALL.

I'll give MAD PROPS to Martyn - he showed me Wubi when he was here for Mardi Gras last month. Then he showed me how easy it was to install Ubuntu. Now I'm so hooked...imagine an OS that's free, runs on your shitty old PC hardware, and looks as nice or nicer than a Mac. Free. Fark!

Now, the only time my Dell laptop boots up to XP is when I want to run live. Otherwise, it's an Ubuntu ass kicker. All drivers work, even the wireless, and the sleep functions. And there is a software equivalent for everything on PC. Often more than one, even audio, though nothing like Live.

So, back to the point... that sounds pretty damn cool! I think I might go for it on my DAW. Live is fucked right now anyway. Might as well before they fix it or something.

How does the experience translate? in other words, when you open Live or another Windows app is there some weird wrapper or GUI strangeness or is it more like Windows minus the Microsoft?

Nevermind... I see, went to the Wubi site.

the only wrapper in Linux is Wine, and only certain apps work within Wine - Reaper works on Linux, actually. But it's a mixed bag. Live won't work in Wine. You'll have to boot to Windows to use Live. But for most other things, you can boot to Ubuntu and not miss Windows.

^that's true - but I couldn't figure out Dual boot with the Ubuntu installer. Kept trying to partition space on my already partitioned drive, so I just decided to not bother. With Wubi, the installer takes up to 30gb of space for your Linux install. You can still mount your NTFS partitions and read and write to them. So in effect, Linux lives inside Windows, and you can boot to it and save all your documents onto your Windows drives.

Seriously, this is as painless and risk free as it gets, ever.
