I spec'ed out a 15" with an i5 with the stuff I need, and it was $2100.
I spec'ed out a 17" with an i5 too and it came to $2400.
$300 difference. Hmmmmm. That would leave the door open for a UAD-2 Solo.

is it not better to go for a 17" i7 then...?
that is what i am looking into.

Until I fully understand what true benefits an i7 brings over an i5, then I'll consider spending more money. Right now the i7 just seems like a top-of-the-line price hike. When I truly understand the difference, I'll decide which way to go.

Likely going with the 15" i7 here, only $200 more than the mid spec'd MBP and you get more graphics memory, a larger HD, and the faster CPU. No need for the high res graphics though, DAW controls are small enough these days

I was wondering what the "big splinter" would be for early adopters of the Intel iSeries MacBook Pros. Remember the first MBPs? Didn't then not have FireWire or something? That was the big splinter back then. When the Unibodies first came out they had no anti-glare option.
It looks like the big splinter here is dual core i5's and i7's. How long will it be before Apple puts out real quad core MBPs? Six months? A year? This summer to accompany the next iPhone?

Or you could get say a Dell XPS 16 with a faster i7 quad core, faster RAM, and a higher resolution screen, for about $1000 less... and that's just the first place I looked.

high-res 15" i7 is the way to go. It is a quad-core that has hyperboost so it virtually is an 8-core laptop. I know 9.1.1 64-bit Logic will take advantage of that and to me that is all I need to make a purchase. 60% faster than the dual-core with an 8 hour battery, awesome

Yes i know and there it goes again. its the reason i switched away solely from mac use 4- 5 years ago. I mean my i7 920 2.88 ghz 8 core 6 gb ddr3 cost £600 and id speced the equivalent mac at the time nearly £5000 in November. In saying that i stil;l have a mac and and will be bbeing another one soon. But.............

Maann--Thats exactly what I'm wondering...I was so assured the newest line of Pro's would have quad-core power - Don't get me wrong having the i5 & i7 chips are pretty dope but still..Hmmmmm...Would love to still have one of these newer models though!

Intense Mojo claims the new MBP's are quad-core. Apple claims that they're dual-core.
I think I'm going to have to go with Apple on this one:

Dell's are not the way to go....they perpetuate virus because even when you reformat your hard drive there is always a previous windows folder that you have to delete after your hard drive is "clean"
The new mac's look pretty good.
I'd go to the dark side once they go quad core and fix the usb bluetooth issues cause I want to play with logic
oh yeah and three usb hubs on the 15 inch

two cores and 4 threads i.e. 4 cores for the i5
two cores 8 threads for the i7

It's going to be a LONG time before we see Apple switch to quad-core for their laptops, they're just too power hungry still. Personally I think the upgrades are great, the top end 15" came down in price and has quite a boost in performance. Much better battery life too, something I'm always running into with my current MBP. Very happy with this, can't wait to get one.
