sorry, didn't get around to this yesterday.
I've done versions with both EQ8 and auto filter. The auto filter had shaper cuts between the bands, less bleeding, but was less transparent - i think you can get a slightly sharper drop off with the filter before you introduce any resonant peaks. Transparency for me here isn't a massive issue as the audio is only being routed through the racks when you are actually using the filter, in which case the audio will be quite mangled anyway as soon as you start cutting things. But the EQ8 just kinda sounded better when cutting such narrow bands; you get the two tracks melting into eachother, without any nasty resonances or obvious holes that sounded too artificial and forced.
The distortion could be your settings creating peaks? not sure how you've got it set up tbh so it's hard to say. You need to be careful with gain. The version I have is not completely transparent, but there definitely isn't anything as far as distortion, just a very very subtle comb like effect that you'd struggle to notice in a club.
I did actually do a version that was close to 100% transparent, verified with phase inversion producing close to silence. It required a long chain of duplicated and inverted signals for each band to create and had so many EQ8/filters, utilities and racks-within-racks that the massive CPU usage was not worth the extra transparency.
anyway, hopefully I'll get a chance to get back on this today for you.
