Sample drum hits at 45 rpm on a portable turntable. Pitch down in live. Wait for your jaw to drop.

It's not about if Live can do it or not... It's how you its tools!
Read this book: Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki. I used to ask similar questions, until I started reading that book. It will change your whole perspective on mixing!
I'm no expert by far, but I'd approach it like this:
Just record your stuff with a cheap microphone in your basement or something. Keep some bleed and errors in there. As mentioned before: It sounds like there is a lot going on in the mid-range. Compressor, EQ three and EQ8 are your friends in this case. But of course I could be totally wrong
I really like the sound. Just like Beck's older cd's, or Tobacco!
