Line 6 has introduced a new $5.99 app, MIDI Surface, that lets you turn your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch into a hardware MIDI control surface. MIDI Surface works with the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer.

HOT. VERY HOT. Now we are starting to see some promise. The problem is that while it's offered at the iTunes store (incorrectly listed as a Line6 product) there's no info to be found at all at Audiofile's website. ? I'd love to know if you can get more than a measely 6 pads going on the drumpad section, lol.
I came for the

Audiofile never host info on the apps they develop for other companies, this is their 3rd or 4th. Nice to see them doing all this work for portable devices, though it seems to be at the expense of their core apps like Wave Editor :(

For those who must have a USB MIDI interface for iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch, the one to look for seems to be iConnectMIDI:
iConnectMIDI: USB MIDI interface for iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch
"We will start shipping iConnectMIDI in May 2010."
I wonder when this will finally come out...

Here's what Peter Kirn of CDM says about MIDI clock:
"Um, it should be possible on any mobile platform to homebrew a MIDI clock implementation without a specific API. What a Core MIDI API might provide is, say, things like MIDI input via USB over the camera adapter kit, if Apple bundled USB class drivers for MIDI — unless I’m missing something else, and there’s some other reason devs would rely on the API.

It seemed from a previous discussion on the Core Audio list of USB audio class that MIDI class was more or less out of the question, so I’m not hopeful on hardware. But doing MIDI clock isn’t rocket science."

Anyway, there's some great news about iOS MIDI: Line 6 has released an open SDK for their MIDI Mobilizer interface:

“With Apple’s new iOS 4 it is now possible for any developer to create MIDI-enabled applications that work with MIDI Mobilizer,” explains Marcus Ryle, SVP of New Business Development at Line 6. As an open invitation to developers, we are now providing the SDK at no charge, and are not charging any license fee or royalty. Hopefully, this should kickstart the development of MIDI-capable iOS apps."

That was quick. MIDI input coming to NanoStudio via Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer:
"Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer! Works for MIDI input only at the moment but it handles note, pitch bend and controller events nicely. The realtime latency looks really good - can't fault it really."

It has baffled me ever since apps like BeatMaker first came out. Even Nintendo DS music apps have had midi clock sync figured out for a while now:

The above method uses PD to receive the OSC calls and translate them into MIDI messages.

Here's another way using ChucK:

Synthetic Bits‘ prototype analog-style MIDI step sequencer controlling an Alesis Andromeda A6 synth via the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface:

Pianist Pro for the iPad now adds support for the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface, allowing bi-directional MIDI control. For wireless MIDI control, the V1.5 update also adds MIDI via DSMI support and optimized MIDI via OSC support.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtbU6UoPKR8

Also adding MIDI support are Omenie’s Mellotron apps:
"We have early access to an advanced prototype of a quite fantastic low-cost MIDI interface for iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad. Latency is insanely low, quality is insanely good. Price – well, all we know is ‘low-cost’, this should get more clear over the next few weeks.

We can’t commit right now to when the device will ship – we hope during Q4 this year, so before the holidays – but it will be immense. As soon as we can tell you more about this new MIDI interface we will, but if the design pans out it will be the nicest one we have seen yet.

Having 8 of the chord pads available on the programmable pads of our in-house Axiom 49 is *brilliant*!! And continuous controllers for M3000 ABC blend, pitch and volume – it is just so fantastic to have a MIDI keyboard plugged into an iPhone!"

Missing Link Wireless MIDI device - wireless OSC to MIDI for iPad and iPhone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YarIPK-gwbw
No wires. No PC. This is huge when you think about it. This will allow you to control hardware wirelessly and directly via your mobile device.

"It is a wireless device that receives OSC and outputs MIDI."
"This is just a prototype, we have custom circuitry in the works. Right now, we have OSC > MIDI working, and we'll be adding the reverse MIDI > OSC functionality soon, as well as a USB MIDI connection in case you do want to use it with a computer."

Tempo Rubato has announced NLog MIDI Synth – a new iOS app that they describe as “The first synth app making your IOS device a real synth playable with MIDI hardware.”

NLog MIDI Synth is based on NLog synth, an existing iOS synth, with added support for the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer. The developer announced Sept 10th that they had been approved by Line 6 and that the app was being submitted to Apple.

Specs have not yet been announced, but it sounds like it will be much like NLog Synth, but with assignable MIDI controllers for the various synth parameters.

Bumpen
Support for CoreMIDI

The first beta of iOS 4.2 adds support for the CoreMIDI framework to the operating system's application program interfaces. This could suggest that future applications would allow new avenues for musical creation, and could also allow physical MIDI instruments connectors.

MIDI, or Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is an industry standard that allows electronic music machines to synchronize and communicate. With an adapter, a device like an iPhone could theoretically create and record sounds from a MIDI instrument.
