Yup; that's exactly what's going on for me as well. Has anyone heard back from Ableton on this?
Re: Cracks & pops when starting or stopping playback
Not me, no. I have "Case ableton393572" assigned to this but no response yet.

Re: Cracks & pops when starting or stopping playback
Pleas keep this thread going, its the only way we will get an answer. It was clear that abes didnt have a clue bout it when I was dealing with them ages ago.... I hope they have found something out by now????
Re: Cracks & pops when starting or stopping playback
Just replied the support email with a link to this thread and others reporting the same issue; hopefully the amount of people experiencing this will get their attention.
Re: Cracks & pops when starting or stopping playback
I've been experiencing the same problem too. It wasn't so bad when I had first started my latest track, but as I got closer to finishing it up, the clicks/pops/buzzing became unbearable. Every time I start/stop or click the mouse within the tracks in the arrangement view. And let's not forget the CPU spikes either.
I can't believe Ableton isn't addressing this issue. It's been happening to me for a good month or so.
Btw, I'm running Live 8.1.3, on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 ghz Intel dual-core processor... 8 gb of Ram. And just like you guys, I've emailed support with my issue, and I haven't heard back yet. Hopefully they'll be quicker than last time, because last time I had an issue (about 6 months ago), it took them 3 weeks to respond (unacceptable).
Bong Bong...

I seem to be getting a lot of audio glitching also.
I had to give up on my last track & bounce the parts down to finish in cubase.
Ran the same loops with no problems.

Re: Cracks & pops when starting or stopping playback
I'm having the same exact issue - massive CPU spikes registering around 300% on the CPU load, and near 100% on my Mac OS 10.6.3 Activity monitor.
The worst part is, this is happening with TWO audio tracks, and one filter delay return. One audio track is a two bar loop with a lot of tone warping (it's dialogue that's been rephrased into a rhythm), and a simple drum loop that's warped to tempo. Easy stuff.
But I'm getting spikes and dropouts just like the video posted earlier.
One other factor that is relatively new for me, is the use of an external USB hard drive for sample playback, with the intention of giving my system a break from handling everything at once. Though this hasn't affected me until now...

Possible solution
OK - Please check this out, as it's worked for me, so far...
I noticed this problem first appeared after mucking around with some Max/MSP MIDI crosstalk. I employed the IAC Bus in Mac OS X (whatever Windows equivalent there is, I would wager it's having a similar effect), later opting to use M4L to make the whole process streamlined.
Having enabled the IAC Bus for MIDI input and output in Live's MIDI preferences (as well as a control surface), I never bothered to disable it. This is when the spikes started...
I just turned off the output driver and control surface configuration, and I haven't had a single CPU spike nor any activity above 5%...
Hope this helps until Ableton can address the issue...

Re: Cracks & pops when starting or stopping playback
Hope Mac users are alleviated by that, unfortunately no IAC in windows so that can't be the issue for us :/
I'm in talks with a support technician, the problem is that I'm on a very tight deadline and can't spare much time for stress tests and whatnot :/

Ah, yes - I hope you a speedy recovery nonetheless!
Have you tried disabling any extraneous MIDI drivers that may be present?
I'm sure you've tried everything though at this point...
Good luck.

Been out of the game for some time travelling around.
Was this ever fixed at all?
